Consignment Barn and Boutique offers affordable western wear, 4-H gear, home decor

Mitsy Southerland had just about given up hope of finding an affordable, well-located retail space to open a new consignment shop offering second-hand clothing and supplies for livestock, agriculture and equine. The shop would also carry western wear, home decor and boots.

And then, when she wasn’t really looking, she spotted a for-rent sign at 621 67th Street Circle E.

“I am going to say it’s all God,” she said of the answer to her prayers. “I was about to give up on this idea.”

On Nov. 23, she opened The Consignment Barn and Boutique in Suite No. 102, with a focus on western wear and offering families of 4-H and FFA members an affordable way to get their children outfitted with what they need.

Mitsy and Chad Southerland have five children, and two of them have been involved with 4-H or FFA.

One of her daughters shows dairy cows. The prescribed outfit is white jeans and white shirt, which can be hard to find in the winter, she said.

Facing some of the challenges that other parents face with affordably outfitting their children, she has set out to provide a one-stop consignment shop.

“There is a lot of cost in addition to the fees,” she said.

The Consignment Barn and Boutique is primarily stocked with western wear, including jeans, show clothing, boots, hats and tack.

Southerland said she would like to stock more tack items, including buckets, brushes, feeders, halters, lead ropes, saddles, and rubber boots.

There are unique items, too, including a logging saw, railroad lantern, winnowing baskets for tobacco, and art work.

Southerland likes her location near Cracker Barrel, and the U.S. 64-Interstate 75 intersection, probably for the same reason that Costco on the other side of the highway likes its. It’s convenient to east and west Manatee, as well as communities to the north and south.

The Consignment Barn and Boutique is open 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. The business is closed on Sunday.
