Bradenton-area fans of famed Florida photographer Clyde Butcher have always had to make a trek to Venice or to the Big Cypress Preserve in the Everglades to visit one of his galleries.

Starting this weekend, Butcher’s art will be permanently on display much closer to home.

Butcher’s third gallery is set to open Friday at St. Armands Circle in Sarasota.

Butcher is best known for his large-scale, black-and-white portraits of America’s nature, and Florida’s nature in particular. He achieves distinctive richness and texture in his images by using antique cameras and traditional film instead of digital processing.

For more than 50 years, Butcher has traveled extensively across the country to capture the diversity, dignity and beauty of nature on film.

Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Ken Burns, creator of the documentary series “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea,” has called Butcher’s work a “national treasure.”

The new gallery is located at 55 S. Boulevard of the Presidents, Sarasota.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday.
