There’s an expanded salmonella outbreak (not the onion one). Recalls: Target, Aldi, Walmart

This story has been updated. The peaches recall became nationwide on Saturday, Aug. 22.

Another salmonella outbreak was announced Wednesday night by the CDC, this one linked to peaches produced by Wawona Packing Company.

On Saturday, the Food and Drug Administration expanded the recall to include bagged and bulk, or loose, peaches that they supplied to retailers nationwide.

You might not know Wawona, but you probably know Aldi and Target, two grocery sellers that get peaches from Wawona and announced recalls Wednesday. Customers with the below recalled peaches should return them to the store for a full refund.

Anyone with questions can call Wawona at 877-722-7554.

The outbreak

So far, this outbreak has been very Midwestern, according to the CDC’s map of the outbreak. Four states — Minnesota (23), Michigan (17), Iowa (eight), Wisconsin (three) — account for 51 of the first 68 cases. There have been 14 hospitalizations overall in the outbreak.

As of Saturday’s FDA alert, other grocery stores affected by the recall include Kroger,Jay-C, King Soopers, City Market, Fry’s, Ralphs, Food 4 Less, Foods Co., Smiths, Walmart and Wegmans.

According to the CDC, salmonella hits about 1.35 million Americans each year. About 26,500 wind up hospitalized, most of that number with bloody diarrhea. Salmonella’s annual death toll averages around 420. For most people, it means four to seven days of diarrhea, stomachaches and fever starting at least 12 hours after infection.
