Here’s why 17,000 cans of organic soup were just recalled nationwide

About 15,134 pounds — or 17,296 cans — of Progresso Organic Chicken Noodle Soup was recalled Tuesday because they don’t contain organic chicken noodle soup.

And that can be a serious problem for those with food allergies.

According to the USDA’s recall notice, a packing boo-boo by manufacturer Faribault Foods resulted in “a meatball and pasta product” being in the 14-ounce cans instead of chicken noodle soup. That means beef and pork instead of chicken, but also milk and soy. Those allergens aren’t in the chicken noodle soup and, therefore, aren’t listed among the ingredients.

That makes the switch an annoyance for most people, infuriating for those who try to avoid beef and pork, but dangerous depending on how serious a person’s milk or soy allergy is.

This Progresso Organic Chicken Noodle Soup label shows wheat and egg listed as allergens under the ingredients. But what’s in the recalled cans has allergens milk and soy.

When a distributor got customer complaints about the contents, Faribault Foods made the recall.

Consumers can return the item to the store for a full refund. Those with questions can call General Mills Consumer Help Line at 800-200-9377.
