Letters to the Editor

Both sides of Civil War were Americans

Herald file photo

In regards to the “Letter to the Editor” of Oct. 1 entitled “US vet takes stance against all Confederate monuments”: The lack of understanding for the history of this country is unfathomable in this letter.

Both sides of the Civil War were Americans! Grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles, cousins all fought each other. It is historical that the largest loss of military personnel in any war and even in several wars combined was the Civil War. Why, you ask? Because both sides were Americans. Not Americans and an enemy.

The South even chose to use the title: Confederate States of America as their country name. As far as the statement that people or countries that try to destroy us, “we call them terrorists.” Are you aware that the British said the exact same thing about our ancestors in 1776? Maybe some reading of history is due.
