Mom says she beat daughter on Facebook live to embarrass her
A 16-year-old girl who lives in Georgia reportedly posted a photo of herself wearing only a towel with her boyfriend on Saturday.
It’s a teenage transgression that would merit punishment from most — if not all — parents, but Facebook users are saying the teen’s mother took it too far.
The mother, identified by the Root as Shanavia Miller, posted a video on Facebook live of her beating the teen on Sunday. But despite the video having more than 10,000 views and multiple users calling for the mother’s arrest, the Savannah Police Department said they haven’t heard anything about the incident.
Child services in the area did not return a call asking if officials were investigating the situation.
The full video - expletives and all - is still public on Facebook.
The mother appears to be beating the girl with a piece of wood at first, and the teenager retreats into a laundry room to get away. The mother then directs whoever is holding the camera to follow her into the laundry room, where she continues beating the girl with her hands.
“You nasty as hell,” the woman shouts at her daughter as she hits her in the face, stomach and shoulders.
The girl is clearly crying and trying to get away from her mother, repeatedly holding up her hands to try to protect her face. Her mother also refers to her as a “thot,” an abbreviation for “that hoe over there.”
The woman eventually takes the phone from whoever was holding it and said, “This is my (expletive) Facebook page now.”
She turns the camera onto the teen, who is covering her face, and accuses the teen of making her look like a bad mother by posting the image with a boy.
The teen’s Facebook page was then changed to pictures of the mother, and she posted several times, denying rumors that the girl had tried to commit suicide after the video and saying she was teaching her daughter respect.
Another post, which says it was written by the teen but written in the same style as posts by the mother, says she did go to the hospital after the beating but only because she had a headache.
The last status on the Facebook page was posted Sunday afternoon. Despite the page’s discussion of the teen going to the hospital and a possible suicide attempt, there is no indication that child services have stepped in.
