Manatee offers seminar series for vets

MANATEE -- Manatee County government is offering a seminar series for local veterans.

Seminar series topics:

9-11 a.m. April 8 - Service-connected disability and Vietnam service. The discussion will cover the definition of service connected disability and what documentation is required by the VA to determine that a disability is service-connected. Benefits related to Agent Orange will also be discussed.

9-11 a.m. April 15 - Veteran and surviving spouse pensions.

9-11 a.m. April 22 - Health care and burial benefits.

9-11 a.m. April 29 - Open forum. Discussion will cover the GI Bill for post 9/11 veterans as well as other education benefits and VA home loans. There will be a question-and-answer session.

The series will be held in third-floor conference room A at the Manatee County Administration Building, 1112 Manatee Ave. W. Coffee and snacks will be provided at 8:30 a.m.

Journalist protection to be topic of local broadcasters

MANATEE -- Joel Simon, executive director of Committee to Protect Journalists, will be guest speaker for The Broadcasters Club of Florida 11:30 a.m. Friday at SaraBay Country Club, 7011 Willow St.

Air Force general to lead discussion at vets event

SARASOTA -- The Sarasota-Manatee Chapter of the Air Force Association confirms two senior Air Force Special Operations personnel will attend the chapter's "Free Movie for Veterans" event on Saturday. The movie, "Lone Survivor" tells the story of a four-man Navy SEAL team sent on an ill-fated

Special Operations mission in Afghanistan.

Leading a post-movie discussion on the Air Force's role in Special Operations activities will be Brig. General Robert Armfield, vice director, strategy, plans and policy on the staff of U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. Accompanying Armfield will be Senior Master Sgt. Nate Salvimini and Chief Master Sgt. Brad Reilly, both experienced special tactics airmen.
