Inmate, 62, dies at Manatee County jail, sheriff’s office says

A 62-year-old inmate at the Manatee County Jail died after an apparent medical episode on Wednesday, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

The man, whose identity was withheld, complained of chest pain around 12:15 p.m., the sheriff’s office said.

He was taken to a medical exam room where he lost consciousness, and medical staff and deputies were unable to revive him. Manatee County EMS arrived at the jail and continued lifesaving efforts, but the man was pronounced dead at 1:06 p.m.

The 62-year-old man had multiple health conditions and had been held in the jail’s medical unit since February, according to law enforcement. He was awaiting a court appearance for undisclosed felony charges.

The sheriff’s office did not immediately disclose the nature of the man’s medical conditions, but confirmed that he had not had symptoms of COVID-19 or tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Deputies also did not suspect foul play in the death.

Detectives were awaiting the results of an autopsy for more information.
