William Shatner beams up to St. Petersburg
For three years on television and through 15 years of feature films, William Shatner commanded the USS Enterprise in his most famous role as Capt. James T. Kirk. He also played TJ Hooker for another three years and Denny Crane of "Boston Legal" for five. Before he hit the big time, he portrayed some memorably troubled characters in classic episodes of "The Twilight Zone."
Shatner is touring the country talking about all that, and about his own life. The tour comes to the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg on Wednesday.
The show is titled "Shatner's World: the One-Man Show." It's all about Shatner, and his only prop is an office chair, but it's definitely a show, not a lecture. And Star Trek fans might be disappointed that it deals with his upbringing, his family and his horses, as much as it does with his years at the helm of the Enterprise. And most casual fans will be surprised by the breadth of his career, which includes prominent stage roles in Shakespearean dramas.
Details: 7:30 p.m. Feb. 3,Mahaffey Theater, 401 First St. S., St. Petersburg. Tickets: $59.50-$79.50. Information: 727-892-5767, themahaffey.com.
