The 10 best deleted sports tweets of the year

Social media is a great way for sports fans to interact with players, teams and the media.

Unfortunately, some people had second thoughts about what they shared on Twitter in 2015. Here are 10 of the best tweets that were deleted this year. This list continues the For Pete’s Sake look back at 2015 (previously: 9 best Royals defensive plays).

Jim Rome got the year started off in fine fashion when he took a shot at band members everywhere on New Year’s Day:

In September, the Texas Rangers were battling for the AL West title, playing a big home game against the Angels. Elsewhere in the second-biggest state in the nation, the Longhorns were being beat soundly by TCU. Naturally, the Rangers tweeted this:

Whoops. A staffer was fired for that tweet, which was deleted.

Next up is Magic Johnson. The Dodgers played a Sunday afternoon game against the Pirates and the game was over when he tweeted this:

Soccer star Alex Morgan had some harsh words for the National Women’s Soccer League and a hotel in Kansas City. I searched high and low for a photo of that tweet, but I was unsuccessful. Here is what she wrote:

“.@NWSL there’s no other way to address continuing problems. Hotels have been unacceptable. For ex. :Bed bugs/mold @ Adams Mark Hotel in KC”

Christine Sinclair took the ball and ran with it when she had this tweet (which has not been deleted):

Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling deleted this tweet in which he compared Muslims to Nazis:

At No. 6, here is Dallas Cowboys defensive star Greg Hardy. A Carolina Panthers fan was excited that his team had drafted a wide receiver and tweeted that the team now had “The Twin Towers.” Hardy, who previously played, for Carolina tweeted this:

Yep, he went there. Hardy soon realized it wasn’t a great idea to make light of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 and deleted the tweet.

Remember that heated regular-season series between the Royals and Blue Jays this summer? The finale of the series in August featured hit batters, empty benches, harsh postgame talks.

Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura took issue with Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista’s unflattering comments about Ned Yost.

Yahoo Sports baseball columnist Jeff Passan had two people translate those words, and it said, “We’ll meet again later and if you do that with me, you’ll see what I’m about. I don’t care about anybody. I used to respect you, but you’re a nobody. … You got lucky this time, but MLB doesn’t get canceled after this season. Keep running your mouth. … You need to stop giving signs. You’re gonna get it from me for being fresh and you really are a nobody.”

Yeah, Ventura later deleted those tweets.

Former Atlanta Braves star Chipper Jones got it in his head that the Sandy Hook massacre of school kids was a hoax. That’s all fine as long as Jones didn’t tweet about it ... wait, he did:

That got deleted, but I included a tweet from Cristina Hassinger, whose mother Dawn Hochsprung was principal of the elementary school and died while trying to protect her students.

Just what fans want to read! Nope. That got deleted.

Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst sure was happy that the Hawkeyes beat Michigan State in the Big Ten championship football game. Wait, I’m being told, Iowa lost that game ... that would explain why she deleted this tweet:

That’s just an appetizer for the best deleted tweet of the year from the perspective of a Kansas City fan. The Royals trailed in the eighth inning of Game 4 of the ALDS in Houston. Trailing by four runs with six outs to go, the Royals seemed doom. At least that’s what Texas Gov. Greg Abbott or someone who tweets for him thought.

As we all know, the Royals rallied to win that game, Game 5 of the ALDS, the ALCS and then the World Series.
