Shuffleboard: Referee school to be held on Saturday

Readers may be surprised to learn that at tournaments in Florida 50 years ago, referees were stationed on every court, along with a volunteer scorekeeper. Where would we scavenge enough volunteers to do all this today? Shuffleboard was once the only game in town and a greater percentage played the game in these environs.

Today we still need referees occasionally, for masters tournaments to decide issues in case some trouble arises on a court, etc.

At 9 a.m. Saturday at the Bradenton Shuffle Club, Jerry Everett will conduct referee school. There is no entry fee. Prospective referees will need a Preview, pencil, cue and a light lunch, as it will take about four hours. Everett requests that referee candidates register with him Thursday at Bradenton Tropical Palms, then come to learn Saturday at Bradenton. This will help new referees, refresh old ones and help any student to become more proficient with rules, judgment calls, etc.

Also beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, President Ron Nurnberger will be present to discuss 10-day notices, which he and Jerry Stannard will vote on in coming weeks at the state meeting. Each player is invited to study these proposals and give your opinion to guide the voters.

Jerry Stannard inducted Chuck and Sue Daidone and Al Nuttall into the Southwest Coast District Hall of Fame on Feb. 17 at the No Two Pros annual tournament at Bradenton.

Chuck whose eyesight has suffered decline in recent years, and Sue, tireless Sunshine Chair of the District received much honor for their steadfast participation in district affairs. Legally blind, Chuck uses a tiny telescope to see the other end of the court, yet he continues to compete quite respectably. In addition to competing regularly, Sue has long served to keep us all informed as to health concerns, accidents, illnesses or deaths of our friends in this fraternal sport.

Al Nuttall served three years as district president and has done it all. A retired teacher from Massachusetts, he is a very effective competitor and communicator. He and Anna have driven many miles and played games on very pleasant days. We all wish them well.

The popular Annual Can-Am Amateur Tournament will be Saturday and Sunday at Mirror Lake Park in St. Petersburg, at 559 Mirror Lake Drive. Registration will be $6 from 8 to 8:30 a.m. This is non-sanctioned, so no points will be earned. There will be prizes and you may meet new friends from both the U.S. and Canada.

Jiggs Harlock passed away last week. Jiggs and Tammy lived for years at Bradenton Tropical Palms then at Golf Lakes. Jiggs was a mentor for several people, some of whom are playing yet today. Ben Coy and Dick Whitaker both remember and appreciate Jiggs. Tammy was still playing during my own career here. Our sympathy goes to Tammy and her family up in Ontario.
