Community sports | Fishing for football

Palmetto hosted its first Booster Club Fishing Tournament this weekend to raise money for the booster club. Jett Getner's team took home the first-place prize of $1,000 with 95 total points. His team caught a 39-inch snook, a 29-inch redfish and a 27-inch trout.

Michael Wenzel, Chris Jensen and Brian Peacock rounded out the top four, winning prizes of $500, $250 and $125, respectively.

The tournament raised more than $10,000 for the Palmetto High Athletic Booster Club, according to the club's website. The Tigers hope this will become an annual event.

Red-hot hockey

Playing on, essentially, home ice, the Tampa Tropics won the 60-plus tier two national championship at Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex over the weekend. Tampa beat the Boilermakers 5-2 in the title game to complete an undefeated run through the tournament that. The Tropics won each of their four games during pool play by at least five goals.

The Florida Son of Beach breezed to the 50 tier four national title at Ellenton, as well. Florida blew out the South Jersey Wheels 6-1 in the title game to cap a perfect championship weekend.

Other winners included the Sun Valley Suns in 50 tier one, the New England Bears in tier two, the Illinois Ice Holes 50 in tier three, the Heartland Hockey Camp 60 in that tier one and the Minnesota Old Timers in 70 open.

Locals get shot at Jam

Between the professionals' runs at Bradenton Motorsports Park this weekend, local amateurs had a chance to compete in front of an International Hot Rod Association crowd for pro-am and junior titles.

William Craft from Melbourne won the junior dragster beginner championship and Camryn Fredrickson from

Palm Harbor won the master title. Mia Schultz, a Virginia native, won in the advanced division.

Sarasota's Tim Butler won a pair of championships at the pro-am, winning in the top dragster and no box races. Naples' John Taylor, Holmes Beach's John Nowicki, Lake Worth's Kenneth Anderson, Dunedin's John Brannen, Palm Bay's Keith Bowers, Bushnell's James Brunner Jr. and Land O' Lakes' Gerry Vizzo also won races in Bradenton.
