Community sports | Admirals prepare for Lightning Cup run starting Tuesday
It's playoff time for the East Manatee Admirals, the county's lone high school hockey program competing in the Florida High School Hockey Association.
The Admirals begin their postseason quest for the Lightning Cup at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday against Tampa Jesuit.
The game is being played in Oldsmar.
East Manatee secured the regular season Lightning Conference title and top seed in the tournament with an 18-0-0 record. The Admirals outscored opponents 178-21.
Jesuit enters as the No. 8 seed, outscoring opponents 89-65 en route to an 11-6-1 record.
The winners from Tuesday and Wednesday's quarterfinals reconvene Friday for the semifinals at the Tampa Bay Skating Academy.
The Lightning Cup championship is slated for Sunday at the Amalie Arena, which is the home of the National Hockey League's Tampa Bay Lightning -- the conference's namesake.
Soccer registration open
Registration is under way for the Lakewood Ranch Chargers Soccer Club's recreation program. The program, which is open to children aged 4-12, is based out of the Premier Sports Campus. For more information, email lwrrecreation@chargerssoccer.com or visit chargerssoccer.com.
In addition, an inaugural spring break soccer camp is being held at the Premier Sports Campus for players 5-14 years old. The five-day curriculum will teach skills according to age and ability. Each session focuses on various areas of the game including dribbling, finishing, passing, receiving and possession. Falcon 5K River Run
Prior to Powerboating and Hydro-X races taking shape on the Manatee River at the inaugural Bradenton Area Riverwalk Regatta, the 11th annual Saint Stephen's Falcon 5K River Run took place downtown.
Bradenton's Michael Lamb clocked in at 16:28.7 to claim the overall championship.
Other male winners included: Bradenton's Mickey Hooke (Masters, 18:13.1), Harrisonburg, Virg., resident Ken Layman (Grand Masters, 20:10.1), Bradenton's Gary Romesser (Senior Grand Masters, 20:50.2) and Port Charlotte's Frank Nicolosi (Veteran Grand Masters, 23:41.9).
Kate Harrison's 17:25.0 time earned her a third place overall showing and first among females.
Other female winners included: Lakewood Ranch's Fernanda Scalera (Masters, 19:40.7), Bradenton's Mary Quinn (Grand Masters, 22:51.0), Hinsdale, Ill., resident Arlene Jarzab (Senior Grand Masters, 26:05.5) and Bradenton's Erma McMullen (Veteran Grand Masters, 35:28.6).
