Florida’s Danell Leyva snags silver in Rio

Miami's Danell Leyva won the silver medal in the men's parallel bars Tuesday at the Rio Olympics.

Leyva's complex routine earned a score of 15.900, a mark that stood at the top until Oleg Verniaiev of Ukraine received a 16.041 to take the gold. Russia's David Belyavskiy won the bronze with a score of 15.783.

Leyva's silver is the first U.S. medal in men's parallel bars since Jair Lynch won silver at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.

Leyva is also a contender in horizontal bar.

The parallel bars silver was Keyva's second Olympic medal. He won all-around bronze in 2012.

Leyva, first Cuban-American on US gymnastics team, lives in Homestead and trains at his parents' gym, Universal Gymnastics.

Leyva was originally an alternate for these games before he made the team after John Orozco was hurt.
