A look at 185 candidates for football coaching jobs at Southeast and Bayshore

BRADENTON -- A total of 185 candidates submitted resumes for the Southeast and Bayshore head football coaching jobs with more than 100 going to Southeast.

It's hard to tell how many are serious candidates, but here is a capsule look at some of the candidates who should be familiar to local residents. To be fair, candidates are listed in alphabetical order:

SOUTHEAST

CHRIS CONBOY -- Former Manatee High assistant under Joe Kinnan was involved with the offense as quarterbacks coach and was the liaison between the players and college coaches. He was one of seven finalists who applied for the job after Kinnan retired. Graduate of Cardinal Mooney

CHAD LEE -- Played at Southeast, turned himself into a successful college player at Louisville after he was initially lightly recruited out of high school. One of the program's great feel-good stories, he went on to be a four year starter for the Cardinals. His football career is an inspirational story for young promising players.

JIM PHELAN -- The defensive coordinator under Joe Kinnan, he was there for Hurricanes last state championship, building one of the best defenses in the state. He also was coordinator under Paul Maechtle at Southeast and Ray Woodie at Bayshore. Considered to have an excellent football mind, he would make a good coordinator if head coaching job doesn't open up.

DOCK POLLARD -- The former Manatee High star went on to play football at Florida. He has delved into acting and was in the movie "We Are Marshall." Also played Willie Randolph in former ESPN series the Bronx is Burning.

BRETT TIMMONS -- A former linebacker, he played on Southeast's two state championship teams and Tulane's 1998 undefeated team. He was head football coach and athletic director at Out-Of-Door-Academy for nine years. Though out of coaching last year, he did some consulting. He has long ties with the community.

RASHAD WEST -- A former all-area quarterback at Southeast, he played at Southeast Missouri where he showed promise, but was hampered by injuries. He had successful seasons as head football coach at Western High and Coral Springs when he was named Broward County Coach of Year for 6A-8A.

JOHNNIE JONES -- A former Booker head football coach and outstanding player for the Tornadoes. He had standout career at the University of South Florida and is known throughout the Sarasota-Manatee County area.

BAYSHORE

MATT ARCADI -- A former Bayshore standout player; he was the Bruins' leading receiver for three years and a former assistant coach for the Bruins. Arcadi is living proof that good people never give up no matter how dire the circumstances. He was paralyzed from the waist down in a car accident just before his 26th birthday almost 11 years ago. Coached from his wheelchair during stint as

Bayshore assistant.

HANK MALOL -- He was an assistant coach at Manatee for five years before resigning prior to last season. He previously coached at Bayshore and is a founder of the Police Athletic League Football program. He served as defensive coordinator at Lennard High last season. Also coached at Palmetto and Saint Stephens.

Jamaal Sanders -- He has been around Bayshore athletics a long time. He played linebacker for the Bruins (1995-99) and at University of Louisiana-Lafayette. He was an assistant with Bayshore football program from 2004-2014 and has had a successful run as the girls head basketball coach taking a program that was floundering and turning it into a winner. He is well respected and liked around the school and his loyalty unquestioned.

OUTSIDE THE AREA

MIKE SIMMONDS -- He was the Tampa Jefferson head coach from 1998-2005, during which he took team to two state title games and to the postseason seven straight years. He was an assistant offensive line coach at University of South Florida; 10th-round draft pick of Tampa Bay Bucs in 1987.

RICH DOMBROWSKI -- The St. Thomas Aquinas graduate has been the head coach at Estero and Immokalee. A gritty guy, took over a hapless Estero 0-10 program that he inherited in 2008 and suffered a 91-0 loss first year before turning it into an 8-3 team in 2012.
