Three Manatee County football teams begin their state championship quest this week.

The Florida High School Athletic Association playoffs get underway for Manatee, Palmetto and Parrish Community. Manatee is in Class 5A, while Palmetto and Parrish are in 6A.

The Hurricanes (7-1) face Largo Pinellas Park at Joe Kinnan Field at Hawkins Stadium. The 5A-Region 3 quarterfinal is a regular season rematch. Manatee beat the Patriots, 34-10, in Bradenton on Sept. 30. It was one of three losses for Pinellas Park this season. Both teams play in District 9, and Manatee won the district title this year.

The Hurricanes’ lone loss was a road game at Lowndes High in Valdosta, Georgia.

Due to the FHSAA’s seeding formula, the Hurricanes are the region’s top seed and Pinellas Park snagged the eighth and final seed into the Region 3 playoffs.

Meanwhile, Palmetto plays Largo in 6A-Region 3. The Tigers are 9-1 this season, with their only loss in the cross-river rivalry game against Manatee. They are the No. 2 seed in the regional playoffs. The Packers went 6-4 and finished runner-up in their district, but secured an at-large playoff berth as the No. 7 seed.

Also in 6A-3 are the Parrish Community Bulls. They travel to New Port Richey to take on undefeated Mitchell. Parrish is 9-1 this year, with its only loss against Palmetto for a district championship. Mitchell has scored 30 or more points in nine of its 10 victories this season.
