Which Manatee County high school football games are postponed after Hurricane Idalia?
Two high school football games planned for Friday were postponed — one by a day, the other indefinitely — because of storm damages, the Manatee County School District said.
Before Hurricane Idalia swept past Manatee County through the Gulf of Mexico on its way to Florida’s Big Bend, an all-county showdown between Braden River and Palmetto was set for this Friday.
The Tigers announced on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that the game was postponed with no makeup date scheduled yet.
“The game’s postponement is the result of unforeseen setbacks caused by Hurricane Idalia,” part of the statement read. “The safety of our players and quality of the field are of utmost importance to us, and we will not compromise on these standards.”
Palmetto’s new turf field at Harllee Stadium was slated to be unveiled Friday. Palmetto was on the road in Pinellas County for the preseason Kickoff Classic and last week’s regular-season opener.
The Tigers are one of two Manatee County programs to get turf fields this fall. Manatee High is the other. The school district approved turf field upgrades last fall to each of the county’s seven public high schools. The plan is for two schools to receive turf fields each year until completion.
While the Palmetto home opener against Braden River won’t happen, other Manatee County teams are still scheduled to play.
However, Parrish Community High’s home game against Englewood Lemon Bay was postponed to Saturday at 7 p.m.
Here’s the rest of Friday’s schedule involving public schools:
- Lakewood Ranch at Cardinal Mooney, 7 p.m.
- Sarasota Booker at Southeast, 7 p.m.
- Sarasota at Manatee, 7:30 p.m.
- LaBelle at Bayshore, 7:30 p.m.
