Local Roundup | Out-of-Door Academy baseball team cranks out the hits in victory at Bradenton Christian
Visiting Out-of-Door Academy pounded out 13 hits en route to an 8-3 victory over Bradenton Christian. The Thunder improved their district baseball record to 11-1. ODA's leading hitters were: Parke Phillips (4-for-4 with two doubles), Nick Sarantzak (two hits and two RBIs) and Nick DiMare (two hits and two RBIs). Duncan Cappar tossed four scoreless innings, while allowing four hits, walking one and striking out three to pick up the win for the Thunder (12-2). Austen Kessler's two-out bases loaded-clearing double paced the Panthers. ODA travels to Saint Stephen's on Friday for its next game.
SAINT STEPHEN'S 16, ST. PETERSBURG ADMIRAL FARRAGUT ACADEMY 0 (5) -- The host Falcons earned a mercy-rule shortened district victory with Mike Madigan (2-for-2, triple, two RBIs, three runs scored) and Jake Westberry (2-for-3, triple, four RBIs) pacing the offense. Ben Schnur, Brett Thoma (RBI double) and Max Runde (drove in two) all notched their first career varsity hits. Sam O'Dell earned a shutout victory after going the distance and allowing two hits, while striking out two. Saint Stephen's improved to 7-7 overall and 5-5 in the district, and host ODA on Friday for another district game..
Boys tennis
SOUTHEAST AT MANATEE -- The host Hurricanes peeled off victories in four of the five singles matches to defeat the rival Seminoles. Singles winners included: Jimmy Heagerty (6-0, 6-1) at No. 1, Joey Wymer (6-1, 6-0) at No. 2, Payne Moore (6-3, 6-3) at No. 3 and Matt Mardones in three sets at No. 5. The Hurricanes are 6-5 and host Palmetto on Tuesday to conclude the regular season. Southeast's Howard Eberly coached his final regular season match as he's retiring after the season.
Girls tennis
LAKEWOOD RANCH VS. BAYSHORE -- The visiting Bruins prevailed by forfeit because of a lack of players for the Mustangs, who won two of the three matches played.
Lakewood Ranch's Natalia Vulkovic won at No. 1 singles, and Grace Hagotian won the No. 2 match. Bayshore's Cailin Finnegan won the No. 3 match.
MANATEE 5, SOUTHEAST 2 -- The host Hurricanes took the first three singles matches with victories by Terri Howard, Allison Hlavac and Hailey Heagerty and defeated the Seminoles.
Southeast's Ruby Halfacre won at No. 4 singles, and Manatee's Brooke McIntosh won at No. 5. Howard and Hlavac won the No. 1 doubles match for Manatee (8-2), and the Muklewicz-Kioutchoukova pairing won the other doubles match for Southeast (7-7).
Boys lacrosse
OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 15, FORT MYERS CYPRESS LAKE 2 -- Ian Martin led the Thunder with five goals to a road rout. Jason Fineberg, Declan McCann, Leland Wheeler and Kevin Deems chipped in two goals apiece, while Hunter Coakley and Jon Eichenbaum each added a goal. ODA travels to Tampa Catholic on Friday for its next match.
JUCO tennis
STATE COLLEGE OF FLORIDA 5, TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE 3 -- Maria Medina, Iulia Sergheeva, Amiena Houston and Mosha Zubkova won in singles, while Medina and Sergheeva won in doubles to improve the Manatees to 5-2. Texas A&M-Kingsville dropped to 6-9. SCF heads to St. Petersburg College on Thursday for a Suncoast Conference match.
JUCO softball
STATE COLLEGE OF FLORIDA 2 (15), ST PETERSBURG COLLEGE 10 (5) -- The Manatees secured a split in a Suncoast Conference double-header on the road. Erica Ward went a combined 4-for-7, while Jessica Harney hit two home runs en route to a combined 3-for-7 performance at the plate in the two games. Brittany Gilliam went 3-for-4 with a grand slam home run during the Manatees' 15-5 victory in the second game. Kayla Maxwell dropped to 8-5 in the 10-2 first game loss, while Jessica Reid improved her pitching record to 12-3 with the game two win. SCF is 20-9 overall and is in second place in the conference with a 4-2 mark. The Manatees next play at South Florida State College on Thursday.
