Ali Yawn tossed a four-hitter and struck out eight to lead Braden River past Armwood, 9-0, in softball action on Tuesday. Sarah Crawford led the Pirates (6-0, 2-0 Class 6A, District 9) at the plate, going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and three runs scored. Brooke Farrow went 3 for 4 with double and 2 RBIs, and Kally Martin added two hits for Braden River. The Pirates return to action Friday at Lennard.
Bradenton Christian 17, SHorecrest Prep 2 -- Ariel Marciano earned the win and collected two of the host Panthers' 12 hits in a game shortened to three innings by the mercy rule. Alissa Kessler finished with four hits for Bradenton Christian (3-3, 2-1 Class 3A, District 5).
LAKEWOOD RANCH 12, PALMETTO 0 -- Logan Newton scattered three hits to earn the win in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule in Palmetto. MacKenzie Meyer went 3 for 3 with three RBIs for Ranch (6-1, 1-0 Class 7A District). Denali Schappacher went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
Baseball
PALMETTO 6, SARASOTA BOOKER 2 -- Hunter Finner struck out six across five innings and the Tigers breezed past Booker in Palmetto. The pitcher allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks before a pair of scoreless relief innings shut the door on the Tornadoes. Finner also went 2 for 3 at the plate and scored two runs. Gunner Womer added a run and an RBI as part of a 1 for 3 day for PHS (4-0).
BRADEN RIVER 6, SEFFNER ARMWOOD 0 -- Tyler Dyson only lasted four innings against Armwood at home, but the pitcher still managed to fan 10 batters while allowing one hit to help the Pirates (4-1) shut out the Hawks. Utility man Cole Pencosky led BRHS' offense with three hits, a pair of RBIs and two runs, and infielder Brian Dillingham went 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Braden River goes on the road Friday to Ruskin for a meeting with Lennard.
OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 11, BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 0 (5)-- Duncan Cappar pitched a five-inning, complete-game one-hitter with six strikeouts and Out-of-Door (5-0, 4-0, Class 3A-District 5) routed the Panthers (0-3, 0-1) at home. Parke Phillips went 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs, Austin Brinling went 3 for 3 with an RBI, and Brady Moore doubled and scored three runs to trigger the mercy rule after five innings at Taylor Emmons Memorial Field.
BAYSHORE 5, INSPIRATION ACADEMY 0 -- Third baseman Charlie Mick slapped a go-ahead single in the sixth inning, and the Bruins held off Inspiration for a home win against the Lions in Bradenton. Pitcher Jared Richardson picked up the win for BHS (2-2) with 1 1/3 innings of relief work and also drove in a pair of runs during Bayshore's decisive sixth inning. Girls tennis
Bayshore 7, Cardinal Mooney 0 -- Sisters Theo and Ava Schultz won their singles matches and combined to win at No. 1 doubles to lead Bayshore (4-0) to the sweep. Cailin Finnegan didn't drop a game en route to her win at No. 3 singles. Braden River returns to action at home against Braden River on Feb. 24.
Boys tennis
SOUTHEAST 5, LEMON BAY 2 -- Jake Mattraw and Konrad Strzalkowski won singles matches at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, and combined to win at No. 1 doubles in a showdown between the two teams expected to vie for the Class 2A-District 11 title. Southeast (4-1, 3-0) returns to action Wednesday at home against Bradenton Christian.
BRADEN RIVER 4, MANATEE 3 -- The host Pirates edged the Hurricanes by sweeping the doubles matches and improved to 4-1 for the season. Braden River also won at No. 1 and No. 3 singles.
JUCO volleyball
SCF -- The State College of Florida announced the hiring of Angie Byrd as its new volleyball coach/campus recreation coordinator. Byrd has a 258-121 career record in stops at Northwest Shoals Community College in Alabama, Seminole State College in Oklahoma and North Carolina at Pembroke.
