Local prep sports roundup | Southeast boys basketball team beats Manatee

Corey Davis scored a game-high 19 points to lead Southeast High School past host Manatee, 77-59, in nondistrict boys basketball on Saturday.

Southeast took the lead early and led 40-19 at halftime.

Keives Brooks added 16 for the Seminoles (15-7), who return to action Tuesday at Lakewood Ranch.

Alex Rodriguez led Manatee with 16 points, including a 13-of-14 effort from the line. Skylor Fleenor added 12 for the Canes, who next play at Venice on Tuesday.

Wrestling

SARASOTA MILITARY DUALS -- Randy Torres (113 pounds) went 5-0 and pinned all five opponents to lead Southeast to a 2-3 record at the tournament. Southeast beat Saint Stephen's and Booker and lost to Sarasota Military, Golden Gate and Ocala Forest.

Jonathan Locke (160), Stephen Kelle (170), Jamal Johnson (195) and heavyweight Raeshaun Lopes went 4-1 for Southeast, which returns to action at the George Jenkins tournament next weekend.

GENE GORMAN INVITATIONAL -- Dominic Bass (152) went 9-0 to lead Palmetto to a fifth-place finish in the 10-team Gene Gorman Invitational at Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda. Derek Smith (145) and Thad Johnson (138) went 6-3. Palmetto beat Lakewood Ranch, Lemon Bay, Clewiston and Mariner. Lake Gibson won the tournament. Jensen Beach and Dixie Hollins were second and third. Palmetto returns to action in the Southeast Invitational in two weeks.
