Local prep sports roundup | Spiller, Hester pace Lakewood Ranch boys to basketball win
Lakewood Ranch built a 19-point lead in the fourth quarter and held off Boca Ciega's late surge to earn a 77-64 victory in the McCollum Shootout at Seminole High School on Saturday in Seminole.
Evan Spiller and Sam Hester led the Mustangs with 15 points each. Spiller added six rebounds and three assists.
Brock Sisson (13 points) and Kodey Elliott (12) joined Spiller and Hester in double figures. Harry Barthelemy contributed 9 points, five assists and four rebounds, helping the Mustangs (15-4) outrebound Boca Ciega 37-20.
Hester was named to the all-tournament team. The one-day event drew 12 teams.
Lakewood Ranch returns to action Tuesday at Palmetto, 7:30 p.m.
Bradenton Christian 83, Sarasota Christian 38 -- Justin Arecena produced 20 points, 20 rebounds and three blocks as the Panthers beat the host Blazers in a Class 2A-District 9 game.
The Panthers are 19-2 overall and 7-0 in the district with the victory.
Brian Leunk also scored 20 points for Bradenton Christian.
Alex Teslair scored 13 points and Domenick Otteni had 11.
Bradenton Christian's next game is a district matchup on Thursday against Gulf Coast at home.
Girls basketball
Bradenton Christian 53, Sarasota Christian 47 -- Freshman post player Bailey Sikkema scored 10 of her team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter as the Panthers (12-5, 4-2 Class 2A-District 9) rallied past the host Blazers. Sarasota Christian, paced by McKenzie Lantz' game-high 18 points, nursed a four-point lead, 40-36, entering the final quarter.
Jessica Jackson contributed 10 points, including three 3-pointers, as Bradenton Christian secured the second seed in the upcoming District 9 tournament. The victory was the Panthers' third this season against the Blazers: The margin of victory has been four, five and six points.
Noteworthy
Braden River senior Brian Dillingham signed with junior college baseball powerhouse State College of Florida on Friday.
SCF has advanced to the JUCO World Series a Florida-state record 10 times, last qualifying in 2010.
Dillingham, a Herald All-Area first-team selection, hit .358 and had 20 runs batted in and 10 extra-base hits as a junior last season.
