Local roundup | Palmetto boys soccer team wraps up with win
The Palmetto Tigers boys soccer team scored twice in the first five minutes and plenty throughout Friday in a 7-3 victory over the visiting Sarasota Military Eagles to conclude the regular season.
Jose Romero scored the Tigers' first goal, and Abel Dubon added a penalty kick to put Palmetto up 2-0 early. Romero added a second goal at the 21st minute with a penalty kick, and Frankie Arroyo added a goal on a corner kick in first half.
Gilberto Caballero added two goals, including a penalty kick.
Fred Manriquez scored a goal on the third penalty kick of the game for Palmetto (12-9-1).
Boys basketball
BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 74, ST. PETERBURG CANTERBURY 35 -- Ryan Leunk scored 27 points and hauled in nine rebounds to lead the host Panthers over the Crusaders.
Alex Telfair added 11 points, and Jake Lister contributed nine points and seven steals in the victory for the Panthers (18-2).
Southeast 71, Tarpon Springs 59 -- Tre Alexandrea led three players in double figures in the nondistrict game that was televised on Bright House Sports Network. Alexandrea finished with 19 for the host Seminoles (12-7), who led 29-25 at halftime over the Spongers.
Keives Brooks contributed 17 and Corey Davis added 14.
Naples Shorecrest Prep 86, Saint Stephen's 34 -- Jordan Edwards scored 10 points and collected four rebounds to lead the visiting Falcons (5-13, 3-6 Class 3A-District 8), who played the second half with seven players. Jordon Murrell added eight points and seven rebounds.
BRADEN RIVER 59, VENICE 44 -- The host Pirates raced to a 34-11 lead at the half on way to a victory over the Indians.
Deoni Cason led the Pirates with 23 points and six steals. Jordan Curtis added 13 points, Daniel Tart had 11 points and eight rebounds, and Curtis Cobb added seven assists for the Pirates (10-8).
CARDINAL MOONEY 63, BERKELEY PREP 60 (OT) -- Emmanuel Lambright scored 23 points, including three free throws in the closing seconds to force overtime, as the host Cougars upset the Buccaneers, who are ranked No. 7 in Class 4A.
Lambright was fouled with 5.5 seconds left in regulation, setting up his free throws, which tied the game at 57. Cardinal Mooney (8-10, 4-5 Class 4A-District 9) went 22 of 24 from the line overall, including 4 for 4 in overtime. Nick Peacock added 10 points for the Cougars, who trailed by nine in second half and seven in the fourth quarter before rallying.
Girls basketball
Bradenton Christian 46, St. Petersburg Canterbury 12 -- Amy Van Ryn scored a game-high 12 points to lead the host Panthers (11-5) over the Crusaders in a Class 2A-District 9 game. Jessica Jackson finished with nine. Bradenton Christian led 24-5 at halftime.
