Prep roundup | Calvio's late goal pushes Palmetto past Pirates

Candido Calvillo's dramatic 76th-minute goal off of Fred Manriquez' through ball put host Palmetto ahead for good Thursday in a 2-1 boys soccer win over Braden River that cemented the second seed in next month's district tournament for the Tigers.

Manriquez also opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a Manriquez header on a Frankie Arroyo corner kick.

Braden River answered with the equalizer five minutes after the intemmission, but that was its only damage against Palmetto freshman keeper Howie Sanders, who had six total saves in just his second varsity start.

Palmetto (8-4-1, 5-2-1) is now on a six-match unbeaten streak and returns to action at home at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Berkeley Prep.

SAINT STEPHEN'S 4, LAKE HIGHLAND PREP 2 -- The Falcons scored four goals in the first 25 minutes, then held off the Highlanders at home to notch a victory.

Alex Virgilio led the way with two goals for Saint Stephen's. Antonio Colacci added a goal, and Jon Boyd tallied a goal and two assists.

Clien Burgess tacked on an assist. The Falcons will be in action again at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at home in their Alumni Game.

LAKEWOOD RANCH 3, SARASOTA RIVERVIEW 0 -- Liam Bramley notched his seventh shutout of the season as the Mustangs rolled to a home victory over the Rams in a 5A-District 8 matchup that lifted Lakewood Ranch to the top of the district rankings.

Ricky Yanaz led the way on offense with two goals, while Pablo Vargas added another for the Mustangs (10-2-1, 5-0-1).

Lakewood Ranch returns to action as it welcomes North Port on Friday.

Girls soccer

BRADEN RIVER 6, PALMETTO 0 -- Lexi Madrid had a goal and an assist, while keeper Mackenzie Moritz collected three saves in a shutout win for the Pirates.

Other goals scorers for Braden River were Kennedy McNab, Camie Kizardi, Joanne Gigliotti, Savanah DeCastro and Jaden Brown.

Athena Kavis had an assist for Braden River (7-6, 5-3), which is off until Jan. 6, when it hosts Saint Stephen's.

MANATEE 6, CARDINAL MOONEY 0 -- Sydney Cornell and Meredith Roberts each tallied two goals and an assist as the Canes dominated the Cougars.

Jessica Schafer (goal, assist), Brianna Blethen (two assists), Clarissa Palmer (goal) and Madison Marcinko (assist) also weighed in for the Canes.

Keeper Emma Monuese (three saves) picked up the shutout win with three saves for Manatee (10-1-1), which hosts district rival Sarasota for Senior Night at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Boys basketball

BAYSHORE 69, DESOTO 52 -- The visiting Bruins won for the third time in three days, led by Bonna Baker's game-high 25 points.

Jaylen Pauley (16 points) and Denny Dessin (13 points) also reached double-digit scoring for Bayshore (6-7), which is off until Dec. 28, when it competes in the Smoothie King Classic at Bradenton Christian.

Girls basketball

LAKEWOOD RANCH 49, PALMETTO 33 -- LaDayzhia Williams led the way with 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks in the Mustangs' home district win.

Aleah Robinson added nine points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists for Ranch (12-2, 5-0), which hosts Seffner Christian in a battle between state-ranked teams Friday night at 7 p.m.

Wrestling

MANATEE 66, NEW PORT RICKEY MITCHELL 18 -- Marshall Craig, at 113 pounds, was one of 11 winners for the Canes in an easy road victory.

Mark Servia (120 pounds), Caleb Rudisill (138), Charlie Small (145), Daniel Cunningham (152), Jackson Beyer (160), Matt McAleer (170), Connor Morang (182), Brandon Cossey (195), Nekari Cheaves (220) and Omar Lagarde (285) also scored wins for Manatee (8-4), which next competes in the Knockout Christmas Classic starting Dec. 29 in Kissimmee.
