Prep sports roundup | Braden River beats Bayshore 74-66

Deoni Cason scored 27 points and made 10 of his 11 free-throw attempts to lead Braden River's boys basketball team to a 74-66 win against host Bayshore on Monday. Guard Curtis Cobb made 9-of-11 from the stripe and helped out the wing with 15 points and six assists. Senior post Tyler Dyson led the Pirates (3-1) with 10 rebounds.

Jaylen Pauley paced the Bruins (1-3, 1-1 Class 5A-District 11) with 20 points of his own and Denny Dessin chipped in 15 during the loss.

BRHS, which has won three straight since a season-opening loss to Bradenton Christian, hosts Sarasota Military on Wednesday. BHS concludes a back-to-back Tuesday with a district game against Gibbs in St. Petersburg.

Boys soccer

LAKEWOOD RANCH 7, BAYSHORE 1 -- Forward Pablo Vargas recorded a hat trick and the Mustangs blew out the host Bruins, 7-1, on Monday. Midfielders Felipe Dangond, Sebastian Fowler, Tyler Puhalovich and Marcos Aquino each scored once for Ranch (5-2-1, 2-0-1 Class 5A-District 8) in the rout.

Lakewood Ranch will travel to Sarasota on Friday for a district game against Riverview. BHS (3-4, 1-2 Class 3A-District 10) travels to St. Petersburg on Wednesday for a district battle with Lakewood.

SAINT STEPHEN'S 2, SOUTHEAST 0 -- The Falcons got goals from juniors Jonathan Boyd and Williem Vacek on Tuesday to remain unbeaten with a 2-0 win against the Seminoles in Bradenton. Boyd also assisted Vacek's goal and received an assist from Alex Virgilio to set up his score.

Saint Stephen's (7-0-1, 4-0 Class 1A-District 7) stays in the county Wednesday when it hosts Manatee. The Noles (2-6, 1-2 Class 3A-District 10) return to district play Wednesday against Osceola in Seminole.

Girls basketball

BRADEN RIVER 52, SARASOTA CHRISTIAN 17 -- For the second straight game, the Pirates scored a double-digit win against the Blazers, this time beating Sarasota Christian, 52-17, in Sarasota 11 days after winning by 12 at home. Junior Bailee Steury paced BRHS (2-3) with 11 points and Alyssa LaBolt checked in right behind her with 10. Briyonna Graham led Braden River with 15 rebounds to help anchor a stout defensive effort against the Blazers (1-3).

After the 11-day layoff, Braden River steps into a back-to-back. The Pirates host Fort Myers Bishop Verot on Tuesday.

CARDINAL MOONEY 42, BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 35 -- The Cougars sunk 7-of-10 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter Monday to ice a 42-35 win against the Panthers in Bradenton. BCS cut Mooney's lead to two points with two minutes left before ultimately dipping to .500 with a nine-point loss. Jacqueline Kulle led Cardinal Mooney (2-5, Class 4A-District 9) with 15 points. Jessica Jackson paced Bradenton Christian (2-2, 0-1 Class 2A-District 9) with 10 and Bailey Sikkema added six.

The Cougars and Panthers both play the second half of a back-to-back Tuesday. Mooney hosts Sarasota Military for a district game in Sarasota while BCS travels to St. Petersburg for a district clash with Canterbury.

Girls soccer

LAKEWOOD RANCH 5, BRADEN RIVER 0 -- In the latest edition of the East Manatee County rivalry clash, the Mustangs blew out the Pirates, 5-0, at home for their sixth shutout of the year. Gi Krstec and Sydney Wicks each scored twice for Ranch, and Jules Agnew added another.

All five of Ranch's goals were assisted in the rout with Julia Ortiz, Conli Schwarz, Makenzie Fisher, Madison Mirandilla and Faith Schyck all dishing out helpers.

Lakewood Ranch (7-1, 1-1 Class 5A-District 8) gets back to district play Thursday when it hosts Sarasota Riverview. BRHS (3-4-1, 1-2 Class 4A-District 11) will travel to Palmetto for a district game of its own Tuesday.
