Prep roundup: Owens leads Braden River past Mooney in OT

Freshman Jamal Owens led the way with 16 points to lift Braden River to a 63-55 overtime win over Cardinal Mooney in boys basketball action on Friday night.

Curtis Cobb chipped in 13 points for the Pirates, including two free throws in the waning seconds of regulation that forced the extra sesson. Parker Golemo added 11 points for Braden River (2-1), while Deonni Cason finished with 10 points. Tyler Dyson grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds for the Pirates.

The Cougars (1-1) got a triple-double from Emmanuel Lambright, who tallied 17 points, 19 boards and 10 blocks, while Jordan McNeal added 13 points.

SAINT STEPHEN'S 63, SEACREST COUNTRY DAY 40 -- Jake Westberry poured in 31 points -- leaving him just seven points shy of 1,000 for his career -- in a commanding win for the Falcons.

Destin Falls added nine points and 12 rebounds, while Jordan Edwards finished with six points and six assists for the Falcons (1-2) who return to action Tuesday at home against Sarasota.

LAKEWOOD RANCH 56, NORTH PORT 43 -- Koday Elliott led the way with 15 points and eight rounds as the host Mustangs improved to 2-0 on the young season.

Devin Twenty and Evan Spiller each added 10 points, while Spiller also collected three steals for Ranch, which returns to action Tuesday at home against Sarasota Military.

BAYSHORE 61, DUNEDIN 54 -- Denny Dessin led the way with 14 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots as the Bruins picked up their first win.

Bonna Baker (10 points, six rebounds, six blocks) and Jaylen Pauley (11 points, five rebounds) also played well for Bayshore (1-2), which returns to action Nov. 30 at home against Braden River.

Girls basketball

SOUTHEAST 70, ST. PETE GIBBS 2 -- The Noles held short-handed Gibbs without a field goal in a blowout win, with Tay Green leading the way with 23 points in just two quarters.

Sophie Giardina added 10 points, Bryanae Thomas finished with nine, and both Jazz White and Marlene Balcin scored eight for Southeast (4-1, 1-0) which returns to action at 6 p.m. Monday at home against Dunedin.

MANATEE 3, LAKEWOOD RANCH 0 -- Meredith Roberts booted two goals, Sydney Cornell notched a pair of assists and the Canes remained unbeaten with a shutout win over the rivals Mustangs.

Jessica Schafer added a goal and an assist, keeper Ashleigh Parker had six saves, and the duo of Kylie Ameres and Kyra Himes anchored a strong defensive game for the Canes (6-0-1) who are off until Dec. 3, when they host Sarasota.
