The scoop: Manatee enters its Class 8A-Region 2 opening-round game on a seven-game win streak in which all the games went to a running clock. During that stretch the Hurricanes have outscored the opposition by an average margin of 47-8. Quarterback A.J. Colagiovanni has raised his level of his play to finish the regular season as the county's only 2,000 yard passer and has spread the ball around. The Hurricanes have the three leading receivers in the area, which is a testament to Colagiovanni's ability to spread the ball around. Lorenz Allen has cracked the 1,000-yard rushing barrier with 1,108 yards to give them a nice balance and Kavious Price has 1,293 all-purpose yards. The Canes do a nice job applying pressure with their front four led by Tony Collins (19 tackles for loss), Mahlik Mills (18 TFL), Matt Mackey (17 TFL) and Emilio Gonzalez (17 TFL). Oak Ridge relies on its defense, which is led by defensive backs Chris Tooley and Imani Partlow and linebacker Jonathan Jones, who is considered a Division I prospect. Quarterback D'Andre Weaver has passed for more than 1,300 yards and his top receiver is Jajuan Roderick. The top threats out of the backfield are running back Rocky Sajous and Tyrek Tisdale, who can play running back and receiver.
Alan Dell's pick: Manatee 38, Oak Ridge 21
Jason Dill's pick: Manatee 42, Oak Ridge 14
David Wilson's pick: Manatee 35, Oak Ridge 14
Class 7A-Region 3 quarterfinal
Naples Gulf Coast (7-3) at Braden River (10-0)
Online: thecube.com; dougmilesmedia.com
When: 7:30 p.m.
Winner gets: South Fort Myers or Venice in next Friday's regional semifinals
The scoop: This Class 7A-Region 3 quarterfinal pits the strength of both teams against each other, with the visiting Sharks utilizing a spread offense to air it out while the host Pirates possess a ball-hawking secondary (20 INTs). Junior DB Demetrius Lawson leads Braden River with six picks, while sophomore DB Tyrone Collins has 11 pass breakups. Braden River also has a few Division I commits in DB/LB JoJo Louis (FIU), OL Alex Salguero (Marshall) and QB Jacob Huesman (FIU). Huesman has a 67.7 completion percentage, while tossing 14 TDs against just three INTs. Gulf Coast counters with sophomore Kaden Frost, who started last year as a freshman. The 6-foot-2 signal-caller has only thrown five INTs this season. Sharks safety Lukas Masterson is committed to Wake Forest. Gulf Coast RB Brendon Drugan leads the team in receiving (33 catches, 486 yards, six TDs) and rushing (1,130 yards, 6.0 YPC, 11 TDs). Gulf Coast started in 1998 but has never won a playoff game in six previous attempts. This is the Sharks' second straight appearance in the postseason, but they have a tall order against the Pirates, ranked second in Class 7A by the Associated Press and coming off back-to-back unbeaten regular seasons. Joe Pinkos on FloridaHSfootball.com predicts Braden River, along with Manatee, as state champions this postseason and the Pirates are favored by 24 points. Braden River's defense has yielded just 8.1 PPG, while the offense has only been limited to less than 30 points once this year.
Alan Dell's pick: Braden River 31, Gulf Coast 13
Jason Dill's pick: Braden River 35, Gulf Coast 17
David Wilson's pick: Braden River 31, Gulf Coast 20
What: Class 5A-Region 3 Quarterfinal
Southeast (5-5) at Fort Myers Dunbar (8-2)
When: 7: 30 p.m.
Online: highschoolcube.com
Winner gets: Lemon Bay or Immokalee in next Friday's regional semifinals
The scoop: Southeast will be going into this Class 5A-Region 3 opening-round game at less than full strength. Running back Kevin Johnson, who leads Manatee County with 1,432 yards rushing, has a left shoulder injury and is probable to play, according to Seminoles head coach John Warren. For the most part this season, Johnson has been the Noles' offense and his absence would be a tough blow. He had to move to quarterback several weeks ago, which cut down on his considerable production. Teriq Houston will carry the load at tailback if Johnson is out or is playing quarterback. The other options at quarterback are sophomore Tyler Stevenson and freshman Johnnie Schoolfield, who made his varsity debut last week against Manatee. Both teams prefer to run the ball, which could make for a quick game. Dunbar has all underclassmen at the skill positions. The leading rusher is 6-0, 215-pound sophomore Abraham Alce, who has 821 yards on 104 carries and three TDs, and freshman Seneca Milledge (37-385) is a change-of-pace. Sophomore quarterback Jairus Johnson has struggled throwing the ball, connecting on 25-of-63 passes for 332 yards with five interceptions and only one TD pass. The leading receiver is junior Kenny Benjamin (10 receptions, 184 yards, two touchdowns.) With the exception of last week's blowout loss to Manatee, the Southeast defense has for the most part been solid. Dequan Williams leads with 7.5 sacks and 22.5 tackles for loss. Jon Locke has a team high 101 tackles and three interceptions, and Teriq Houston has 18 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Dunbar was the only team in 5A-12 with a winning record. If Kevin Johnson plays and the Noles' defense plays up to its potential, this is a game Southeast could win.
Alan Dell's pick: Dunbar 24, Southeast 17
Jason Dill's pick: Dunbar 28, Southeast 14
David Wilson's pick: Dunbar 21, Southeast 17
Class 3A-Region 3 semifinal
Cardinal Mooney (2-8) at Fort Pierce John Carroll (7-3)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Winner gets: Either Clearwater Central Catholic or Melbourne Holy Trinity in next Friday's regional semifinals
The scoop: The Cougars have struggled this season but are in the postseason because they won two of their three district games. Those accounted for their only wins on the season, limping into the playoffs after falling to Bayshore, 14-10, last week. These two programs locked up in the same district back in the 1980s, with Mooney producing the better gridiron brand. Things are different this season as the Cougars are traveling to the other side of the state for a first-round matchup against a Rams program that has won six of their last seven. The Rams' only setback during the run was a 38-14 loss to 3A state power Clearwater Central Catholic. The Marauders won Mooney's district and are the likely opponent waiting the winner of this one. Mooney RB Jaz Mongeon is done for the season with an injury, which means the Cougars will need a big game from QB Tristan Hillerich (1,289 yards, 13 TDs, eight INTs). John Carroll's defense has 14 INTs on the year, while its offense has featured a few different looks under center this season. Nick Celidonio (66.9 completion percentage, 190.3 PYPG) has the most passing attempts at 148.
Alan Dell's pick: John Carroll 42, Cardinal Mooney 10
Jason Dill's pick: John Carroll 35, Cardinal Mooney 21
David Wilson's pick: John Carroll 34, Cardinal Mooney 24
Florida Bowl
Saint Stephen's (9-1) vs. Lakeland Santa Fe Catholic (10-0)
When: Saturday, 7 p.m.
Where: Pennington Field in Oviedo
The scoop: The Falcons will try to avenge their only loss of season against Santa Fe Catholic on Saturday in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference's championship game, called the Florida Bowl. Quarterback Fred Billy threw his only two interceptions of the regular season during the two-touchdown loss in October and also lost his only fumble. The sophomore was named the team's most valuable player after both running and throwing for 11 touchdowns during the regular season. He also went over 1,000 rushing yards including SSES' two postseason games. The Falcons' loss to the Hawks was also one of only three times this year they allowed more than 10 points. Lineman Jake Westberry, one of two seniors for the Falcons, anchors the SSES defense and has logged nine sacks so far this season. Saint Stephen's other senior Bobby Harrison recorded a season-high 96 receiving yards in the Falcons' 35-0 win against Boca Raton Christian in the SSAC semifinals. Santa Fe Catholic has scored 56 points in each of its two postseason games, including a 56-35 win against West Palm Beach Berean Christian in its semifinal game.
Alan Dell's pick: Santa Fe Catholic 28, Saint Stephen's 21
Jason Dill's pick: Sante Fe Catholic 35, Saint Stephen's 31
David Wilson's pick: Santa Fe Catholic 31, Saint Stephen's 28
