Former Tampa Bay Buccaneer and Pro Bowl cornerback Donnie Abraham, was named IMG Academy's new defensive coordinator on Tuesday.
Abraham, who stepped down as the head coach at Clearwater High in late April, replaces Joe Sturdivant as the Ascenders' defensive coordinator. Sturdivant departed IMG to take the head coaching job at Ocala Trinity Catholic last February.
In two seasons leading Clearwater, Abraham compiled a 4-16 record. His expertise is on the defensive side of the ball. As an eight-year NFL veteran, Abraham racked up 38 interceptions and ranks No. 2 on the Bucs' all-time list in that department with 31 picks.
Abraham is the third new hire for the IMG Academy football program. Former NFL quarterback Steve Walsh was named the new director of football, while Kevin Wright, who was previously at Carmel (Ind.) High, was named the new head coach at the end of March. Those two took over the position vacated by former Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Chris Weinke, who is coaching quarterbacks with the St. Louis Rams.
