GIRLS SOCCER

Saint Stephen’s 2, Cardinal Mooney 2: Grace Miller scored two second-half goals to help the host Cougars forge a tie with the Falcons.

Saint Stephen’s Jackie Schlossberg opened the scoring in the first half, splitting a double team and shooting low into the corner with just four minutes until halftime.

After Miller’s goals gave Mooney a 2-1 lead, Saint Stephen’s senior Katie Pierce pounced on a loose ball and beat the Cougars defense before being brought down for a penalty kick. Kendall Miller placed the ball in the back corner with nine minutes on the clock.

Aubrey Dunbar of Saint Stephen’s (6-2-1) and Abigail Beitkus of Cardinal Mooney (9-2-2) each had an assist. Falcons goalie Emma Craig had nine saves and Mooney’s Francesca Tringaly had one.

“I’m really proud of our performance tonight,” Falcons head coach Andrew Sopher said. “The girls took advantage of the opportunity to play against a quality Cardinal Mooney team. Emma Craig played her best game of the season and came up with big saves in the last few moments that helped us stay in the game. It was also great to see Jackie Schlossberg get a goal after bouncing back from an ankle injury last week. Tonight really was a true team performance and we have a positive result to build on going into our holiday break.”

Saint Stephen’s next plays Jan. 5 when the Falcons host Lakewood Ranch.
