Local roundup: Vargas, Yanez score two goals to lead Lakewood Ranch boys soccer to victory
Pablo Vargas and Wilmer Yanez each scored two goals as the Lakewood Ranch boys soccer team defeated Sarasota 4-0 on Tuesday to improve its record to 10-0.
Trevor Franko, Drew Butler, Pablo Vargas and Josh Hays each had an assist for the Mustangs (4-0 in district play), and goalie Ryan Freeman had two saves.
Lakewood Ranch travels to Manatee for a 7 p.m. game Thursday.
Braden River 4, Charlotte 0: Adan Escobar scored two goals to lead the host Pirates (5-2) to victory.
Nicholas Anderson and Grant Hill also scored for Braden River, which got assists from Anderson, Carlos Falconette and Jacob Hysell. Goalie Parker Grier had two saves.
The Pirates host Palmetto on Thursday.
GIRLS SOCCER
Braden River 4, Charlotte 0: Lexi Madrid scored twice to lead the Pirates (6-2 overall, 5-1 district) to a road victory.
Ashley Tollner and Izzy Vasquez also scored for Braden River, which got assists from Brooke Tyquinco (two), Sofia Mingote and Savanah DeCastro.
Up next for the Pirates is a trip to Palmetto.
Manatee 3, Riverview 0: The Hurricanes improved to 8-0-2 with a home win over the Rams.
Molly Setsma, Julia Murdoch and Makenna Stickler scored goals for the Hurricanes, who are now 5-0 in district games. Brooke Caparelli, Zoe Nolan and Molly Setsma all had an assist.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Braden River 70, Manatee 41: The Pirates improved to 6-2 with a road win at Manatee.
Leading scorers for the Pirates were not available.
Top performers for the Hurricanes (7-2) included Jada Mullinex (nine points, eight rebounds), Carly Paynter (nine points, eight rebounds) and Andrea Soto (eight points).
Manatee hosts Sarasota at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Lakewood Ranch 67, Sarasota 54: India Searles had 23 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and four blocks to lead the Mustangs (8-4, 3-0).
Two other Lakewood Ranch players reached double figures — Kayla Bell with 14 points and Sarah Fazio with 10.
The Mustangs travel to Palmetto on Thursday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Palmetto 60, Braden River 50: The Tigers outscored the Pirates 25-7 in the fourth quarter to rally for the road victory.
Kenny Brown led Palmetto with 13 points in the district opener for both teams.
Amari Jones led Braden River (3-2, 0-1) with 12 points, and Kam Brooks contributed 10.
The Pirates will host Lakewood Ranch on Friday.
Cardinal Mooney 55, Cypress Creek 42: Mason Johnson had 12 points and Meko Mayes 13 rebounds to lead the Cougars (4-2, 2-1) to a road win.
Dante Pascarella added 11 points for Cardinal Mooney, which will travel to Southeast next Tuesday.
