Manatee High wrestling wins Sebring Duals; Schewe, Sikkema lead BCS hoops teams to victories
The Manatee High wrestling team was a perfect 5-0 Saturday on its way to winning the Sebring Duals.
Manatee defeated Lake Wales (76-3), Ridge Community (66-15), Sebring (48-31), Winter Haven (46-30) and Avon Park (63-15).
Five Hurricanes were undefeated on the day, including Noah Wadle (106/113), Angelo Dedona (106/113), Brandon Dossey (195), Joshua Booker (220) and Donnie Shoup (220).
Manatee (7-2) hosts the Class 3A-District 8 Duals on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Bradenton Christian 72, Sarasota Christian 52: AJ Schewe scored 36 points, half of his team’s total, to lead the Bradenton Christian boys basketball team to a 72-52 victory against visiting Sarasota Christian on Saturday.
JJ Benedict scored 13 points for the Panthers (5-3), who also got solid contributions from Dayton Modderman (nine points, 11 rebounds) and Nick Swaagman (eight points, six assists).
Jordan Litwiller led Sarasota Christian with 21 points.
Up next, BCS hosts Sarasota High at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Bradenton Christian 61, Sarasota Christian 18: Bailey Sikkema scored 29 points, single-handedly outscoring the opposition as the Panthers improved to 5-3 with a victory at home.
Amy Van Ryn scored 15 points for BCS, and Emma Swaagman added seven.
WRESTLING
Captain Archer Classic: Three Palmetto High wrestlers placed in the 19-team tournament at Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda.
Andrew Duncan took second place in the 220-pound weight class. Also placing were Brendan Valley (sixth, 145) and Brandon Waiters (fifth, 182.
Duncan improved to 8-1 this season, knocking off three undefeated wrestlers on his way to the final.
Palmetto finished 13th in the team standings.
