Local roundup: Manatee, Out-of-Door Academy, Lakewood Ranch post girls soccer shutouts
Molly Setsma and Zoe Nolan both booted hat tricks Thursday as the Manatee girls soccer team thumped the host Sarasota Sailors 8-0.
The Hurricanes improved to 7-0-1 overall and 4-0 in district play.
Also contributing goals were Elizabeth Budslick and Brooke Caparelli.
Julia Murdoch added four assists, and contributing individual assists were Alexis Peck, Olivia Glavin, Alley Rouifed and Zoe Nolan.
Out-of-Door Academy 2, Saint Stephen’s 0: Madison Opstal scored a second-half goal to lead the Thunder over the Falcons.
ODA, which improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in district play, also scored on an own goal late in the second half.
Susan Pacer had four saves in goal for ODA, and Emma Craig had five for Saint Stephen’s (6-2, 3-1).
Lakewood Ranch 6, Riverview 0: Faith Schyck and Corrine Kasten had two goals apiece as the Mustangs trounced the Rams.
Hajar Benjoud and Caitlyn Kline also scored goals as Lakewood Ranch improved to 4-2-2.
Braden River 3, North Port 2: Freshman Brooke Tyquinco scored her first goal in high school competition — and added another one for good measure — as the host Pirates edged the Bobcats.
Emma Parrish added a goal, and Sofia Mingote and Kennedy McNab provided assists for the Pirates (4-3, 4-1).
Boys soccer
Braden River 3, North Port 2: Adan Escobar had two goals, and the visiting Pirates prevailed despite playing a man down for 60 minutes of the game.
Nicholas Anderson also scored, and Oswaldo Herrera and Nicholas Anderson added assists.
Goalkeeper Parker Grier had six saves as the Pirates improved to 4-2.
Lakewood Ranch 2, Riverview 1: Alex Thompson and Drew Butler scored as the visiting Mustangs (9-0, 4-0) remained perfect.
Trevor Franko had an assist, and Josh Laviere made four saves to secure the victory.
Girls basketball
Braden River 77, Palmetto 8: Cheyenne Stubbs had 22 points, six assists and six steals as the visiting Pirates (5-1, 2-0) pounded the Tigers (0-6).
O’mariah Gordon chipped in 20 points, nine assists, seven steals and eight rebounds for the Pirates.
Cardinal Mooney 21, Clearwater Central Catholic 19: The host Cougars picked their first victory of the season in a back-and-forth contest.
Senior Katie Beckmann led the Cougars with 10 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Also contributing to the win was Madison Reyes with five points and seven steals.
Lakewood Ranch 56, Manatee 12: Kayla Bell (14 points), Sarah Fazio (10 points, five steals, six assists) and India Searles (nine points, four rebounds) paced the Mustangs (7-2).
Bradenton Christian 67, Saint Stephen's 40: Hannah Wiers and Amy Van Ryn scored 15 points apiece, and Emma Swaagman added 10 to pace the host Panthers (4-3).
Lenae Jones had 18 points and Claudia Sbaschnik chipped in 12 for the Falcons.
Boys basketball
Braden River 76, Bradenton Christian 62: Amari Jones had 22 points, eight rebounds and two steals to lead the host Pirates over the Panthers.
Three BCS players finished in double figures: A.J. Shewe (15 points), J.J. Benedict (13) and Elijah Johnson (12).
Also contributing to the victory were James Boldin (12 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals), Lonnie Brown (12 points, 3 assists, 3 steals), Drevian Mays (9 points, 4 assists, 2 steals) and Lantz Barton (8 points, 3 steals, 2 assists).
