Local roundup: Manatee girls basketball team improves to 5-0

The Manatee girls basketball team improved to 5-0 with a 56-18 victory Tuesday over the host Palmetto Tigers.

Senior guard Jada Mullinex lead the Hurricanes with 18 points, and junior guard Lilli McIntosh had 12 points after going 4-for-5 from the three-point line.

Braden River 64, Sarasota 52: The visiting Pirates prevailed in the first district game of the year for both teams.

Three players scored in double figures for the Pirates (4-1): Cheyenne Stubbs (23 points), Julia Rodriguez (19) and O’mariah Gordon (17).

Julia Dobbert led Sarasota with nine points, and Sophie Giardina had eight.

Sarasota Christian 34, Cardinal Mooney 20: Katie Beckmann scored 11 points for the Cougars, but Cardinal Mooney fell short against the Blazers.

Alyssa Schrag (11 points) and Hailey Knepp (7) led the Blazers.

Boys basketball

Cardinal Mooney 65, Sarasota Christian 63 (2OT): Dante Pascarella scored 30 points and added six steals and six rebounds as the host Cougars defeated the Blazers in double overtime.

Mason Johnson, who scored 14 points, sank two crucial free throws with six seconds left to secure the win.

Meko Mayes added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Cougars.

Leading scorers for the Blazers were Jordan Litwiller (34) and Reed Miller (13).

Southeast 79, Manatee 69: Cedric Brooks scored 36 points and added four rebounds and three steals as the Seminoles defeated the Hurricanes.

Kam’ron Green added 12 points and six rebounds for Southeast.

Leading scorers for Manatee were Carter Bendinghaus (22) and Jermaine Graham (17).

Southeast’s JV squad won 62-42.

Boys soccer

Braden River 3, Venice 1: The host Pirates improved to 3-2 with a victory over the Indians.

Scoring goals for Braden River were Grant Hill, Nicholas Anderson and Adan Escobar. Contributing assists were Kyle Villarante, Anderson and Jacob Hysell.

Parker Grier had seven saves to earn the win in goal.

Lakewood Ranch 2, Manatee 0: The Mustangs (8-0, 3-0) stayed unbeaten, getting goals from Wilmer Yanez and Pablo Vargas in the home victory.

Ryan Freeman made two saves to record the shutout.

Girls soccer

Manatee 1, Lakewood Ranch 0: The Hurricanes (6-0-1, 3-0) beat the visiting Mustangs.

Makenna Stickler scored the game’s lone goal on a header from a corner kick, assisted by Julia Murdoch. Goalkeeper Emma Monuese had five saves to earn the shutout.

Braden River 1, Venice 0: The visiting Pirates beat the Indians and improved to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in district play.

Lexi Madrid scored the winner with an assist by Ashley Tollner.
