ODA girls hand Saint Stephen’s first loss in girls soccer

The Out-of-Door Academy Thunder handed the visiting Saint Stephen’s Falcons their first defeat of the season in a 5-0 blowout Tuesday in girls soccer.

The Thunder scored three times in the first half and twice in the second.

ODA’s Natalie Gorji had a hat trick, Madisyn Opstal had a goal, and ODA also scored on an own goal courtesy of the Falcons.

The Thunder had eight shots on goal, and the Falcons (3-1) had four.

Palmetto 1, Charlotte 0: The Tigers prevailed over the visiting Fighting Tarpons. Junior Goalkeeper Morgan Collins had 14 saves in the shutout while senior captains Shelby Britt and Abby Hamm and junior MaKayla Teets led the defense.

Sophomore Jayden Zipperer scored the lone goal, her third of the season, with the assist from senior Alexandra Mercer.

Girls basketball

Saint Stephen’s played in the St. Pete High School Pre-Season Classic against Class 8A Countryside High. The score was Countryside 40, Saint Stephen’s 28.

Top scorers for Saint Stephen’s were Claudia Sbaschnik (12 points) and Jordyn Byrd (7).

Top scorers for Countryside were November Morton (17) and Alyssa Barber (8).

The Falcons play again in the tournament at 6:45 p.m. Thursday against Class 8A Pinellas Park High at St. Pete High.

Bradenton Christian 74, Venice 47: The Panthers coasted to a victory in the Lemon Bay preseason classic.

Amy Van Ryn led BCS with 22 points. Bailey Sikkema added 20.

The Panthers resume play Thursday in Lemon Bay at 5:30 against Charlotte.

Boys soccer

The Saint Stephen’s Falcons opened the season with a 2-1 win over the host Out-of-Door Academy Thunder in a district contest

Ben Whorf gave the Falcons the lead by following in a shot from his brother, Jacob Whorf.

Noah LaBelle scored the Falcons’ second goal with an assist from Mark Gharby.

The Thunder scored in the 81st minute to cut the deficit in half.

Trevor Mulqueen had six saves in goal for the win.

Palmetto 4, Sarasota Riverview 3: George Morales had a hat trick, and Ty Dolan added a goal as the Tigers opened the season with a win on the road.

Daniel Sanchez had six saves in goal for the victory for the Tigers. The Tigers also scored on an own goal.

Lakewood Ranch 4, North Port 2: The Mustangs were led by goals from Travis Freeman, Trevor Franko, Wilmer Yanez and Pablo Vargas. Josh Lavieri had eight saves in goal.
