Bayshore’s Ryley Ober captures two state swimming titles
Bayshore High junior Ryley Ober won two more state championships Friday, capturing the 200-yard freestyle and 100 free titles at the Class 3A meet at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center.
One year after winning the 200 free and 500 free crowns, Ober defended her 200 crown and added the 100 title.
Ober cruised to victory in the 200 free, winning in 1:47.25, nearly 3 seconds better than runner-up Taylor Ward of Land O’Lakes.
In the 100 final, Ober was victorious in 50.39 seconds, easily topping Lemon Bay’s Hunter Scott, who touched in 52.12 seconds.
Meanwhile, Bayshore senior Alexandra Graham placed sixth in the 500 free, finishing in 5:07.87.
Also, Bayshore junior Andrew Kalaman took fourth in the 500 free, touching in 4:36.49.
Class 3A golf
Manatee’s Gabrielle Tomeo shot a 1-over 73 at Mission Inn and Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills and was tied for seventh after the first round of the Class 3A state tournament.
Tomeo trailed co-leaders Erika Smith of Lake Nona and Madison Hewlett of Tarpon Springs East Lake by three shots halfway through the 36-hole event.
In the girls’ team competition, Lakewood Ranch was tied for sixth in the 16-team field after posting a first-round 329 (41 over). Darby Laurvick (81, tied for 36th), Ashleigh Angelo (82, tied for 41st), Ashlyn Einwachter (83, tied for 45th) and Natalie Robson (83, tied for 45th) were the Mustangs’ scorers. Ashley Ringo shot 90 and was tied for 70th.
In the 3A boys’ competition, Lakewood Ranch was tied for 12th in the 16-team field after its first-round 328 (40 over). The Mustangs’ scorers were Mike Wijas (79, tied for 34th), Drew Angelo (81, tied for 50th), Matt Bruton (82, tied for 55th) and Dylan Gabbert (86, tied for 71st). Mark Bruton shot 94 and was 88th.
The event concludes Saturday.
