Prep roundup: Catch up on busy night in Manatee County high school sports

Maria Huang of Saint Stephen’s and Gabriella Tomeo of Manatee tied for medalist honors, but the Falcons earned the victory in a girls golf tri-match Tuesday at The Links at Greenfield Plantation.

Saint Stephen’s had a team total of 189 as Huang (41) was followed by her sister, Catherine Huang (43), Kendall Miller (45) and Bella O’Donnell (60).

For Manatee (218), Tomeo’s 41 was followed by Molly Faul (56), Gracie Lewis (60) and Allison Hlavac (61).

Out-of-Door Academy (236) took third place, led by Lexi Murphy’s 43. She was followed by Christy Wyatt (50), Susan Pacer (71) and Madeline Crosby (72).

Palmetto 224, Southeast 274

Tigers (2-5) junior Ashlyn Gardner had the low round with a 44 against the Seminoles (0-1) at The Preserve Golf Club at Tara.

BOYS GOLF

Sarasota Military Academy 204, Bayshore 256

Bayshore’s Robert Jimenez earned medalist honors with a 45, but SMA (3-1) defeated the host Bruins (0-2) at Manatee County Golf Course.

Zach Perron led SMA with a 46.

Saint Stephen’s 141, Bradenton Christian 204

Massimo Mbetse fired a 32 to win medalist honors and lead the Falcons (12-1) over the Panthers (2-4) at IMG Academy Golf Club.

Other qualifying scores Saint Stephen’s included Ryan Kinkead (35), Alan Klenor (37) and David Hu (37).

Bradenton Christian was led by Jack Knowles (37), followed by Noah Cone (40), Bryson Morishita (61) and Alexis Sikkema (66).

The match was played at IMG. St. Stephen’s is now 12-1, BCS is 2-4

North Port 160, Manatee 193

Mike Wood shot a 44 to lead the host Hurricanes, who lost to North Port (3-2).

The Bobcats’ Zack Kubik shot a 34 to earn medalist honors.

Other qualifying scores for Manatee (0-5-1) included Gabe Arendt (47), Caleb Arendt (49) and Mathew Wood (53).

VOLLEYBALL

Bradenton Christian 3, Saint Stephen’s 0

Madison Allen had 11 kills and 21 digs as the Panthers (13-4, 4-0 district) rolled past the rival Falcons 25-22, 25-23, 25-11.

Other standouts included Bailey Sikkema (9 kills), Emma Laade (8 kills, 10 digs), Emily Eurice (31 assists, 10 digs), Ashley Waldo (18 digs).

BCS travels to North Port on Thursday.

Manatee 3, Sarasota 0

The Hurricanes improved to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in district play with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-14 win over the Sailors.

Top players included Aja Jones (9 kills), Rachel Sullivan (9 kills) and Jojo Coulter (7 kills).

Up next for Manatee is a Senior Night showdown with Riverview on Wednesday.

Bayshore 3, Gulf Coast HEAT 1

The Bruins (6-6) won a hard-fought match against the HEAT that included four long sets. Bayshore finally prevailed 25–23, 24–26, 25–22, 28–26.

Top players for the Bruins included Kenia Cuqui-Bello (15 digs, 10 kills, 2 aces), Hannah Crum (24 assists, four aces), Briana Mays (six kills, two stuff blocks) and Vanessa Gonzalez (six digs).

Bayshore hosts Southeast on Thursday.

Out-of-Door Academy 3, Sarasota Christian 2

The host Thunder rallied from down 0-2 to defeat the Blazers 22-25, 15-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-9.

CROSS COUNTRY

Saint Stephen’s 5-team meet

Saint Stephen’s won most of the team titles and Out-of-Door Academy swept the individual honors at a meet hosted by the Falcons.

Saint Stephen’s was first in the Boys 5K race with 50 points, followed by Cardinal Mooney (65), Out-of-Door Academy (65), Bayshore (71) and Southeast (102). Kai Soderberg of ODA had the best time at 19:20.31.

The Falcons also won the Girls 5K race with 28 points, followed by ODA (61), Southeast (80) and Cardinal Mooney (96). ODA’s Maeve Studdiford had the best time at 23:21.88.

ODA’s Aubrey Robbins won the Girls 3K in a time of 13:14.53 but didn’t have enough runners to best Saint Stephen’s in the team standings.

But the Thunder (18 points) did top the Falcons (39) in the Boys 3K race, and ODA’s Alex Vatter led a sweep of the first four places with a time of 11:39.71.
