Golf Plus: 97-year-old golfer wins league crown

Colorado native A.J. Morris won Monday's West Florida Golf Tour event at Laurel Oak Country Club's East Course with a 7-under-par 65. Morris earned a little more than $1,000 for his two-shot win over Palm Harbor's Travis Huston and North Port's Sebastian Mark. Lakewood Ranch's Chris Kennedy fired a 69 to finish sixth.

The WFGT is in Estero for a two-day event at Old Corkscrew Golf Club that wraps up Thursday. After that, there are three events remaining on the Winter Tour series schedule.

The Lakewood Ranch Golf Academy summer camp has its dates set at Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club. The eight-session camp runs on a weekly basis starting Monday, June 13. The cost is $250 a week per child; there's a 10-percent discount for siblings. An additional $25 registration fee per child is required. The camp is for junior golfers ages 6-16 and is run 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday each week.

The camp costs include coaching (full swing, short game, putting, etiquette, rules), on course play, lunch, snacks and refreshments daily.

There's also a goodie bag with a T-shirt, cap and more. Golf activities run from 9-11:30 a.m., with an hour break for lunch another 1 1/2 hours for golf and the final two hours spent at the Lakewood Ranch Athletic Center for swimming.

Summer is just around the corner, which means private clubs are offering summer memberships. From May 1 until October 31, those wishing to join Sara Bay Country Club can do so for $100 per month (plus tax). There's no green fee. Additional costs include cart fees ($25 per person for 18 holes) or a walking fee ($12.50 per person for 18 holes). There's also a minimum of $50 per month for spending, which includes food and beverage.

HOLES-IN-ONE

On Feb. 12 at Terra Ceia Bay, Francesco Facchetti aced the 111-yard sixth hole with an 8-iron. Witnessed by Don Bushea and Nick Bua.

On April 14 at Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club, Peggy Ossanna aced the 132-yard second hole using a 5-wood. Witnessed by Lisa Deutch and Sharyn Massau.

On April 15 at River Run Golf Links, Andy Olsen aced the 112-yard fifth hole using a 9-wood. Witnessed by Rich Bennett, Randy King and Ray Mullins.

On April 16 at Bradenton Country Club, Sue Cooper aced the 127-yard second hole with a 5-wood. Witnessed by Rick Cooper.

On April 19 at River Wilderness Golf and Country Club, Betty Ann Troncin aced the 125-yard fifth hole with a driver. Witnesses were Nola Raitz, Rega Powers and Stella Hwong.
