This week's Golf Plus column

A foursome of professional golfers are taking aim at qualifying for the LPGA Tour in this week's final stage of Q-School held at Daytona Beach's LPGA International.

Bradenton's Jaclyn Sweeney, Ginger Howard, Doris Chen and Lakewood Ranch grad Ericka Schneider are vying for one of the 20 LPGA Tour cards up for grabs. The top 20 and ties earn full-time playing status next season, while Nos. 21-45 at the conclusion of the event on Sunday get conditional playing status for next year.

Howard performed the best among the locals in Wednesday's first round. She posted an even-par 72 and is tied for 60th place.

Chen, an IMG Academy alum, had a 73 and is tied for 79th.

Sweeney shot a 3-over par 75 to tie for 119th place, while Schneider (77) is further back in tie for 144th place.

The action continues Thursday.

-- Indiana's David Mills posted a 4-under par 68 to win the West Florida Golf Tour�s event at Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club on Wednesday. Mills earned a two-shot victory over North Port�s Sebastian Mark. The WFGT returns to the area with an event at Sarasota's Laurel Oak Country Club on Monday.
