The University of Michigan and other college football programs can continue to hold practices at IMG Academy or other warm-weather locations of their choosing -- for now.

On Friday, the NCAA banned satellite camps and clinics, restricting coaching staff's to camps and clinics at facilities regularly used for practice or competition by the program. The move, initiated by the Southeastern Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference, came in response to Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh's much-publicized camp tour last summer across the south.

Though Harbaugh did not start the practice of conducting camps and clinics around the country, he was the highest visibilty coach to engage in the practice. Among the camps he conducted was one at South Florida.

Harbaugh ignited a second national debate when he brought the Michigan football team to Bradenton during the school's spring break earlier this year for a week of spring practices at IMG Academy.

That move also drew equally heavy criticism from the SEC and ACC, which pledged to work to end the practice through NCAA legislation. While such legislation may be passed later this year as part of a comprehensive review of the sport by the NCAA's oversight committee, Friday's ruling does not address the issue.

According to Associated Press college football writer Ralph Russo, the NCAA views such practices as a separate issue from sattelite camps and clinics.

That means Michigan and, perhaps, other schools remain free to plan trips next year.
