Local sports roundup | Southeast rolls into postseason on streak

Southeast High School won its third game in a row Saturday with a 92-87 victory against visting Booker.

Ronald Taylor scored a game-high 31 points, Corey Davis added 27, Tre Alexandrea chipped in 17 and Jonathan Colon contributed 11 for the Seminoles in the regular-season final for both teams.

Southeast (18-7, 7-3 Class 5A, District 11) plays at 7 p.m. Wednesday against the winner of the Dunedin-St. Petersburg Lakewood first-round game.

Wrestling

Braden River's Chance Charbono won the 138-pound weight class at the George Jenkins Tournament in Lakeland. Southeast's Stephen Kelle (170 pounds) finished fifth, and Braden River's Riley Dunn (106) finished sixth in the two-day, 37-team event.

Girls weightlifting

Nine athletes from four area high schools earned berths in the Florida High School Athletics Association girls weightlifting state finals scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Kissimmee Civic Center.

In Class 2A, Manatee's Heather Ball and Jenna Sypula earned spots in the 101-pound weight class. They are two of five girls who qualified with 230-pound totals, meaning the competition to medal could be fierce. Only four in the weight class qualified with heavier weight totals.

Other Manatee qualifiers include senior Callie Nichols (129 weight class) and junior Brooke Schamber (154).

Sierra Rawley (183) is Braden River's lone qualifier.

Elizabeth Atkins (199) is the lone Palmetto qualifier.

Bayshore has three qualifiers in the Class 1A competition. Junior Elisabelle Polynice (183) shares the eighth seed in her weight class. Senior Tyra Shelby is the seventh seed in the 199-pound weight class. Senior Jessica Marcelin is the fifth seed in the unlimited weight class.

The Class 1A competition takes place Friday. The Class 2A event takes place Saturday. Competition both days is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.

The field in each weight class consists of the top 20 qualifiers, by total weight.

JUCO baseball

SCF 9, Broward CC 2 -- Ryan Miller (1-0) scattered three hits across six innings in his first start to lead the Manatees on the second day of the annual JUCO First Pitch Classic at Calvary Christian High School in Clearwater. Richie Rivera and Andrew Dilaqua led the offense with two hits each. SCF (2-1) returns to action at 10 a.m. Sunday against Calhoun College.

SCF 7, Miami Dade 6 -- In Saturday's early game, Rivera and Keyshawn Lynch collected three hits each as part of a 13-hit attack in the victory. Rivera added two runs scored and two stolen bases. Dilaqua added two hits and drove in three. Vladimir Nunez (1-0) earned the win in relief.

JUCO women's tennis

BROWARD CC 6, SCF 3 -- The No. 6-ranked Seahawks defeated the No. 4 Manatees in Fort Lauderdale in the season's opening match.

Posting wins were Iulia Sergheeva (No. 1 singles), Sergheeva and Maria Medina at No. 1 doubles, and Maria Zuvkova and Catherine Murphy at No. 3 doubles.

JUCO basketball

STATE COLLEGE OF FLORIDA 91, ST. PETERSBURG COLLEGE 80 -- The host Manatees earned their first Suncoast Conference victory of the season with a win over the Titans in a junior college contest.

Blake Harper led SCF scorers with 21 points and four three-pointers, and Joshua Floyd added 19 points and five assists. Other top performers for the Manatees (10-15, 1-3) were Raheem Williams (12 points, six rebounds), Khalil Ozuna (11 points) and Reshard Brown (11 points, nine rebounds).
