Saint Stephen’s alums reunite in college golf tournament

A couple of former Saint Stephen’s standout boys golfers are plying their trade at the next level. Connor Lynch is a senior at Brown and recently posted an 81-77-158 at the Quechee Club Challenge in Vermont. Jack Cen is also playing golf in the Ivy League at Cornell, where he played in the same event as Lynch.

He posted a 70 in the first round of the Quechee Club Challenge and finished in a tie for seventh in the individual portion of the tournament.

Tomeo stays ahead of rainy weather with national tournament schedule

Manatee High’s Gabrielle Tomeo has kept her game sharp heading toward the high school golf postseason with national tournaments. The latest was the American Junior Golf Association’s Toyota Music City Junior in Nashville, Tenn. Tomeo finished in a tie for 20th following a 79 in the final round.

Tennessee’s Ashley Gilliam won the girls division title with a 69 in the final round.

West Florida Golf Tour returning soon with big cash payouts

The West Florida Golf Tour’s Summer Series recently concluded, but that doesn’t mean there’s a huge break in action. The Winter Tour schedule is out, and the WFGT begins with a three-day walking major at The Meadows Country Club on Oct. 24. The WFGT follows up with a second major in Port Charlotte on Nov. 7. The two tournaments are significant as $7,000 is the scheduled payout for the winner of each event.

Clinics begin next week at University Park Country Club

Beginning next week at University Park Country Club, amateurs can get expert instruction from weekly clinics that former South African Open and European Tour winner, Clinton Whitelaw, and former LPGA Tour player, Sue Ertl, are conducting. Whitelaw is running the men’s clinics that start next Tuesday and run for three weeks. Ertl is running the women’s clinics that begin next Wednesday and run for three weeks. The cost for each is $25 per clinic. The topics are chipping (first week), back to basics (second week) and putting (third week).

On Wednesday, Sept. 21, at University Park Country Club, Harry See aced the 139-yard fifth hole with a 9-iron. Witnesses were Paul Cuviello and Marc Loundy.

On Thursday, Sept. 29, at River Run Golf Links, Dan Finch aced the 117-yard 17th hole with a 9-iron. Witnessed by Bill Boyer.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, at University Park Country Club, Mike Soler aced the 140-yard fifth hole with an 8-iron. Witnessed by Tim Akin.
