Florida State coaching search is nearing end. Here are the top targets, report says.
As the countdown toward the early signing period later this month draws closer, the search for Florida State’s next head football coach is reportedly nearing its end.
The Tallahassee Democrat reported the Seminoles are hoping to announce their new head coach early this week.
The top candidates are Iowa State’s Matt Campbell, Penn State’s James Franklin, Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly and Memphis’ Mike Norvell, according to the Talllahassee Democrat.
FSU was undefeated under longtime assistant coach Odell Haggins during his two spells as interim head coach prior to Saturday’s rivalry game with Florida. The Gators trounced the Noles 40-17.
Several current Seminole players advocated on social media for Haggins to be hired in November.
FSU fired Willie Taggart less than two years into his tenure in Tallahassee. According to the Tampa Bay Times, Taggart and FSU never signed a formal contract, just an agreement the day he was announced as the program’s first African-American head coach.
Not signing an official contract was expected to cause potential ramifications to Taggart’s roughly $18 million buyout, the Times reported.
