Off the beaten path

Love is in the air at the Olympic diving pool.

He Zi of China received a silver medal in women’s 3-meter springboard Sunday before accepting something else – an engagement ring.

He’s boyfriend and fellow diver Qin Kai surprised her with a marriage proposal as she stepped off the medal podium. A serious-looking Qin got down on bended knee and appeared to speak at length to He before opening a small box.

Qin took out the ring and after she solemnly nodded yes, Qin slipped it on her finger. He clapped her right hand over her eyes and Qin presented her a red rose encased in glass.

The crowd cheered its approval. The other divers stopped what they were doing and watched in amazement.

He carried the red rose container to the medalists’ news conference along with her silver medal. She said the couple has been dating for six years and Qin’s proposal was a surprise.

“He said a lot of things,” He said, describing Qin’s speech. “He made a lot of promises, but the most important thing is this is the guy I can trust for the rest of my life.”

Athlete to watch

After failing to qualify for the 200-meter dash, Allyson Felix looks to win her lone individual medal of the 2016 Olympics on Monday night in the 400-meter dash. A six-time Olympic gold medalist heading into Rio known for her quick start out of the gates, Felix takes the lead early in races, forcing her opposition to respond early. This was evident at both the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, where she won gold by .41 seconds, and at last month’s Olympic Trials. While Felix’s claim to fame on international stage has typically been the 200 meter (gold in 2012; silvers in 2008/2004), she began shifting to a 400-meter focus in 2015 and has been steady there since.

Led by a 24-point outburst from Carlos Arroyo and double-digit point efforts from Eddie Casiano and Larry Ayuso, Puerto Rico upset the heavily favored United States men’s basketball team 92-73 to open group play in Athens, Greece. It marked just the United States’ third defeat in Olympic play and the first since pros were allowed to compete in 1992. Even with a star-studded roster that included Carmelo Anthony, Tim Duncan, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, among others, the U.S. dropped two more games in the tournament — a 94-90 defeat against Lithuania in group play and an 89-81 loss to Argentina in the semifinals — before settling for the bronze medal.
