Off the beaten path
Middle Eastern politics spilled onto the judo mat when Islam El Shehaby of Egypt refused to shake hands with his winning opponent, Or Sasson of Israel. El Shehaby, an ultraconservative Salafi, had come under pressure before the games from Islamist-leaning and nationalist voices in Egypt to withdraw from the first-round heavyweight bout against the Israeli.
With about a minute and a half left in the bout, Sasson earned an automatic victory with two throws of El Shehaby.
The Egyptian lay flat on his back for a moment before rising and standing opposite Sasson in front of the referee. When Sasson extended his hand, El Shehaby backed away, shaking his head.
The referee called El Shehaby back to the mat and obliged to him to bow; El Shehaby gave a quick nod, and he was loudly booed as he exited.
Competitors typically bow or shake hands at the beginning and end of a match as a sign of respect in the Japanese martial art.
Ofir Gendelman, Arabic language spokesman for the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, called the incident “shocking.” The International Judo Federation called it a sign a progress that the fight even took place between the two athletes. Egypt’s Olympic Committee distanced itself from El Shehaby’s actions.
“This is already a big improvement that Arabic countries accept to (fight) Israel,” spokesman Nicolas Messner said in an email. The competitors were under no obligation to shake hands, but a bow is mandatory, he added.
IOC spokesman Mark Adams said the International Olympic Committee also would look into it.

Athlete to watch
The race for the fastest man in the world begins Saturday with the 100-meter dash prelims. While Jamaica’s Usain Bolt eyes a third consecutive Olympic gold, American Justin Gatlin is going to make Bolt work for it. Gatlin, 34, is the oldest sprinter to make an American Olympic team, but his credentials are solid. He has four Olympic medals to his name, including a gold in the 100-meters at the 2004 Games before Bolt’s rise to stardom. At the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, he finished a mere .01 second behind Bolt to claim silver. Gatlin cruised to the top time at the US Olympic Trials, winning in 9.80 seconds.

With more than 10,500 athletes representing 201 nations present, the 2004 Olympic Games commenced in Athens, Greece, with its opening ceremony, marking a return to the site of the first modern Olympic games after 108 years, 24 Summer Olympic Games and 21 host cities.
Athens became just the fourth city to host multiple Olympics, joining Paris (1900, 1924), London (1908, 1948, 2012) and Los Angeles (1932, 1984). Tokyo will become city No. 5 when it hosts the 2020 Olympic games. The United States led the final tally with 101 overall medals, including 36 gold. China was second with 32 gold medals. Russia won 28 golds for a third-place finish. Host nation Greece finished 15th. The 2004 Olympics marked the first games where major broadcasters were allowed to serve video coverage of the Olympics over the Internet.
