Team Florida Gulf Coast wins Mushtock Open
For the 12th straight year, the Mushtock Open brought some of the best weightlifters in Florida to Bradenton, and the locals kept one of the two team trophies in the area. Team Florida Gulf Coast, a club consisting of lifters from the 941 area code, won the women’s trophy at the event it hosted July 30, led by best youth female Breanna Jacobs of Charlotte County.
Nahum Guerrero, a Palmetto student competing for Bradenton’s Full Circle Performance, was named best male youth. Palmetto’s Havoc Barbell Club swept the masters division. Robin Charlton was named best master female and James Denorfa was honored as best male master.
The meet’s best overall lifter was Dominic Veteil from ASU Weightlifting Club and Boone, N.C. Team Florida Jacksonville won the male team title.
Back to school with the Marauders
The Marauders will hold a pair of promotional nights this weekend during a three-game home series against the Mets. The first is a golf giveaway night Friday, followed by a Back to School Night the following evening. Bradenton will give out 500 backpacks Saturday to the first 500 kids 12 and younger.
Both Friday’s and Saturday’s games start at 6:30 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. The Pirates’ Class A Advanced affiliate has already clinched a spot in the postseason after winning the Florida State League South division first-half title.
Test and Tune continues at BMP
The Thursday Test and Tune will have its next run at Bradenton Motorsports Park this Thursday during an off week in Bradenton. The promotion, which has been running sporadically since July 14, presents anyone the opportunity to run the quarter-mile drag strip in a race or street car, truck or motorcycle.
Gates open at 5 p.m., with runs going from 6 to 11 p.m.
