O’Donnell, Garcia fail to qualify at swim trials

Matthew O’Donnell finished 58th at the men’s 200-meter backstroke preliminaries competition on Thursday at the U.S. Olympic swim team trials in Omaha, Neb.

O’Donnell had to put his swimming career on hold to battle a bout of hydrocephalus and enduring two brain surgeries, and needed to finish eighth or better to qualify for the finals. He recorded a time of 2:03.88.

In the same competition, Matthew Garcia of Cardinal Mooney High School in Sarasota finished 90th with 2:05.61.
