Marauders outlast Fort Myers

Bradenton 11, Fort Myers 10

Closer Luis Heredia induced a game-ending double play as Bradenton escaped with an 11-10 victory against Fort Myers at McKechnie Field on Monday in Florida State League action.

In the first 3-hour game of the Marauders’ season, they took a 4-1 lead into the seventh. However, Fort Myers scored five runs in the inning to take a 6-4 lead. Bradenton responded with two in the home half of the inning and five in the eighth. However, reliever Henry Hirsch (2-3), the fourth Bradenton pitcher, couldn’t close the game. Fort Myers scored four runs in the ninth before the double play.

Michael Suchy led Bradenton, going 4 for 5 with four RBI. Cole Tucker added four hits and two RBI.

Earlier Monday, Bradenton starting pitcher Stephen Tarpley was named the league’s pitcher of the week for the week of June 20-June 26. The left-hander is Bradenton’s third pitcher of the week in 2016. Tarpley went 2-0 and struck out 12 batters in a pair of six-inning outings.

Up next: Bradenton sends Jon Brubaker (0-1, 4.91) against Jupiters’s Luis Castillo (5-3, 2.00) in the opener of a three-game set. Start time Tuesday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
