Orta's gem lifts SCF in baseball

ST. PETERSBURG -- Ronny Orta tossed a six-hitter for his second complete game of the season in a 5-1 victory by State College of Florida against St. Petersburg College on Saturday.

Orta struck out seven. His previous complete-game was a seven-inning contest.

Gerritt Hall led the Manatees at the plate, going 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs. Keshawn Lynch went 2 for 5, including an RBI double. Andrew Dilacqua added a single.

SCF opens another key Suncoast Conference series against Hillsborough CC on Monday.

Tennis

SCF -- Maria Medina was named the women's tennis player of the week for the NJCAA.

Medina, a native of Caraca, Venezuela, won the junior college state singles and doubles championship last weekend. The freshman handed Macarena Olivares her first loss in junior college play in the final. Medina teamed with Iulia Sergheeva to win the doubles title. Medina went 6-0 during the week of April 4. For her efforts, Medina was named player of the year for the FCSAA Conference.

Softball

Florida SouthWestern 8-6, SCF 3-4 -- The host Buccaneers improved to 46-11 overall and 19-1 in Suncoast Conference play with the sweep of the Manatees (14-5, 31-13).

Florida SouthWestern is ranked No. 13 nationally in the most recent poll.
