Prep football | Palmetto's Brandon Luckett signs with Idaho after visit

Conversations started late between Brandon Luckett and Idaho, but Luckett's patience paid off. On Tuesday, the Palmetto wide receiver signed his National Letter of Intent to join the Vandals.

Luckett was the Tigers' leading receiver with 39 catches for 411 yards and three touchdowns. The senior was a second-team Herald All-Area selection after finishing fifth in the county in receiving yards and third in catches.

He first heard from Idaho two weeks ago and lined up an official visit for this past weekend. He was intrigued by the prospect of playing Division I football and was impressed by the Moscow, Idaho, campus.

"A couple months ago I would've thought, 'What is Idaho?'" Luckett said. "I just thought of potoatoes when I think of Idaho, but it's a great opportunity for me. I just believe all the stars lined up."

Luckett didn't have any D-I offers by signing day, so he held off on signing with a Div. II school or junior college to see what could develop. He picked up an official offer during his visit.

Luckett, who was a defensive back for two years at Lakewood Ranch before transferring to PHS for his final two seasons, is expected to be a wideout and kick returner for the Vandals, but Idaho is also intrigued by Luckett's defensive ability, Tigers head coach Dave Marino said.

"When I first got up there all the coaches were excited to have me up there. All weekend they showed a lot of love," Luckett said. ""Their energy just kind of radiated off and I felt that, and I felt like that was a genuine energy."

A two-star athlete in 247sports' composite rankings, Luckett previously drew interest from South Florida and Football Championship Subdivision programs Tennessee-Martin, Savannah State and Cornell.
