Prep football | Palmetto's Jack Allison throws for game-high 83 yards, Highlight-reel touchdown in Under Armour All-America Game win
ORLANDO -- Before Jack Allison took the field for the Under Armour All-America
Game at the Orlando Citrus Bowl on Saturday, he quickly devised a celebration with Dionte Mullins. When Allison came into the game as Team Highlight's third quarterback he was going to start feeding his future Miami teammate. When Allison threw the wide receiver a touchdown, they needed something ready.
"That's exactly what I said," Allison said.
As the No. 3 quarterback, Allison's passing attempts were limited to the first half. His third and final completion, though, provided the game's brightest highlight and a moment of ecstasy for the Hurricanes.
Mullins ran a fade down the right sideline and Allison locked in. The quarterback from Palmetto hurled a pass toward the front of the end zone for Mullins. The Miami Gulliver Prep wideout turned and palmed the ball out of the air with one hand before tilting his body across the goal line for Highlight's second touchdown. Allison hunted him down on the sideline and each one held up a "U," which they slapped together before dabbing.
Allison completed 3-of-7 passes, including a 53-yarder to uncommitted wide receiver A.J. Brown. Allison's 83 passing yards were a game-high and he was one of two quarterbacks to throw a touchdown.
"I'm just glad he got a chance to get in there and work with Mullins," said Sean Allison, Jack's father. "They're gonna be at Miami in a few days together. I knew he was gonna throw to him whether he was open or not. He said, 'That's the plan.'"
Allison, who threw for 1,430 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior for the Tigers this past fall, will move to Coral Gables on Wednesday to begin as an early enrollee at the University of Miami. Mullins will be with him when the Hurricanes begin spring practice begins in February.
To prepare, the two spent most of the week together before hooking up for a score in Team Highlight's 27-0 win against Team Armour. They were roommates for the week leading up to the game as the nation's top prospects practiced in Orlando.
Although the two won't room together in Coral Gables, Allison wanted to build up a rapport with a receiver he can grow with for the next four years.
They'd known each other for a bit, but this week furthered their relationship.
"It was pretty cool," Mullins said. "Jack is a great guy on and off the field. He's a pretty funny, cool guy. Me and Jack really got along pretty well and pretty fast."
Allison was the third quarterback into the game for Highlight, checking in during the second quarter after former IMG quarterback Malik Henry got his two series.
After handing the ball to running back B.J. Emmons on his first snap, Allison had a chance to throw. Brown ran a short curl in the right slot and Allison eyed him. He froze for a moment as a linebacker blew in front of Brown, trying to jump the route. As the defender passed, Allison fired a dart to Brown, who charged down the field for a 53-yard gain to the Armour 6-yard line for the seventh-longest pass in the game's history.
"It was cool just to be with all these great, amazing players," Allison said. "And to throw a touchdown in this game, it was amazing."
Allison threw three more times in the red zone and each one fell incomplete. The first and third were dropped by receivers draped in tight coverage. The second was nearly intercepted and ultimately just deflected by Cocoa safety Chauncey Gardner. Highlight settled for a field goal by IMG Academy kicker Ricky Aguayo, who made two short field goals and three extra points.
IMG sent a record five players to the game, including Aguayo, who is committed to Florida State. During the game, linebacker Rahshaun Smith recorded two tackles and committed to Clemson, and wide receiver Drake Davis pledged to LSU before catching two passes for 19 yards.
Uncommitted defensive tackle Shavar Manuel also recorded a pair of tackles and cornerback Saivion Smith, another LSU commit, had two tackles and a pass breakup.
Allison returned to the field for Team Highlight's next series and again the drive started with Allison handing the ball to Emmons, an Alabama commit from Freedom in Morganton, N.C.
This time it ended as a three-and-out when Allison missed Winter Garden West Orange wide receiver Eddie McDoom.
Head coach Herm Edwards dialed up a fake on fourth down and punter Dom Maggio ran for a first. Allison got another chance.
He responded with a completion to tight end Naseir Upshur, a Seminoles commit, and two plays later found Mullins for the highlight-reel touchdown.
On the opposite sideline, one Team Armour player was most excited. Sam Bruce, a Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas wide receiver committed to Miami, couldn't help but be excited about the Hurricane connection.
"I think everybody celebrated when he caught the pass. It was an unbelievable pass," Bruce said. "The quarterback put the ball in the place where he had to make a play, and he made the play. That's what the University of Miami is all about."
