Prep sports roundup | Bradenton Christian's Ryan Leunk joins 1,000-point club in blowout of Braden River

Bradenton Christian shooting guard Ryan Leunk began the season with 996 points in his career, and with a pair of free throws in the first quarter of the Panthers' season-opening 75-51 win against the visiting Braden Rivers Pirates the senior joined the 1,000-point club in boys basketball.

The leading scorer for Bradenton Christian (1-0) on Tuesday, however, was guard Jake Lister, who dropped in 17. Center JT Toellert added 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Guard Alex Telfair rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11.

The Panthers head to St. Petersburg on Saturday to face Keswick Christian in its next game. BRHS (0-1) returns to action Wednesday against Southeast.

ST. PETERSBURG LAKEWOOD 77, BAYSHORE 71 -- The Bruins went back and forth with Lakewood during its season opener Tuesday in St. Petersburg, but ultimately fell 77-71 to the Spartans.

BHS (0-1, 0-1 Class 5A-District 11) was tied with Lakewood (1-1, 1-1) as late as 66-66 before the Spartans scored 11 of the final 16 points. Jaylen Pauley led the way with 21 points for Bayshore, which hosts Lakewood Ranch on Wednesday.

OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 66, ST. PETERSBURG KESWICK CHRISTIAN 41 -- The Thunder handled Keswick Christian wire-to-wire Tuesday in Sarasota for a 66-41 blowout win and a second straight victory to begin the season. ODA (2-0) took a 46-30 lead into halftime and kept building after the break to beat the Crusaders (0-1) a day after opening the season with a win against Sarasota Military.

CARDINAL MOONEY 85, ENGLEWOOD LEMON BAY 35 -- The post-Ryan McMahon era began with a bang for the Cougars, who blew out Lemon Bay 85-35 on Tuesday in Englewood. Emmanuel Lambright led Mooney in both scoring and rebounding with 25 and 10, and Nick Peacock contributed 21 points and three assists against the Manta Rays (0-1). Mateo Whelton chipped in 15 points and five rebounds, and Richard Krupa and Derek Arnel each scored seven.

Cardinal Mooney opens its home slate Friday against Braden River.

Boys soccer

LAKEWOOD RANCH 7, SOUTHEAST 0 -- With a hat trick from forward Pablo Vargas leading the way, the Mustangs blew out the Seminoles 7-0 on Tuesday in Bradenton. Ranch (4-3, 2-0 Class 5A-District 8) earned its third straight shutout win and goalkeeper Liam Bramley recorded his fourth in a row. Forwards Sam Stapleton-Jones and Ricky Yanez, and midfielders Tyler Puhalovich and Travis Freeman scored Lakewood Ranch's other four goals.

The Mustangs face another county foe Thursday when they host Manatee. The Noles (1-5, 0-2 Class 3A-District 10) host St. Petersburg Lakewood.

Girls basketball

SARASOTA 66, MANATEE 22 -- The Hurricanes slipped back to .500 on Tuesday with a 66-22 blowout loss to the Sailors in Sarasota. Guard Briana Purington led the Canes (2-2) with six points. Sailor post player DeQuandra Hill led all players with 23 for Sarasota (3-0).

Manatee opens district play Thursday when it hosts Sarasota Riverview.

PALMETTO 51, SARASOTA BOOKER 43 -- A dazzling all-around performance from Tina Stephens helped the Tigers beat Booker 51-43 on Tuesday in Sarasota. The post player scored 17 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, dished out four assists and blocked two shots. Guard Taylor Rozier added 10 points, five assists and three steals for PHS, and guard Anissa Washington scored eight.

Palmetto goes on the road Thursday against Bayshore.

ST. PETERSBURG LAKEWOOD 63, BAYSHORE 16 -- The Bruins failed to crack double digits in the first half Tuesday and dropped their first district game 63-16 to Lakewood on Tuesday. BHS (1-2, 0-1 Class 5A-District 11) trailed 45-8 at halftime and the Spartans (4-0, 3-0) closed out another win to stay perfect.

Girls soccer

SAINT STEPHEN'S 5, BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 0 -- The Falcons swarmed the Panthers on Tuesday in Bradenton and despite 13 saves from BCS goalkeeper Rayna Smith, SSES blew out Bradenton Christian 5-0. Saint Stephen's (4-3, 2-1 Class 1A-District 7) seized control of second place in the district behind Out-of-Door.

The Falcons will play a non-league game Thursday against Tampa Prep while the Panthers (6-2, 0-2) will go for its first district win against Sarasota Christian.

LARGO INDIAN ROCKS CHRISTIAN 4, OUT-OF-DOOR 1 -- The Thunder trailed by a single goal at halftime in Largo on Tuesday, but Indian Rocks Christian ran away from ODA with three in the second half to beat Out-of-Door 4-1 and end the Thunder's four-game winning streak.

ODA (5-5, 4-0 1A-7) picked up three district wins in four games entering Tuesday before the Golden Eagles (5-1-1, 2-0 Class 1A-District 6) dealt Out-of-Door its first loss since Nov. 5.
